Topic: Panelolu has arrived

Hi team,

my Panelolu LCD rotary encoder and sd card reader has arrived. Now I have everything I need for my setup... except my Solidoodle.

My camera is charging now, but I'll take some pics as I put it together. I ordered the pre-soldered version, but it seems that only one small part is pre-soldered and there is still a bit of work to do.

Re: Panelolu has arrived

Mine came in yesterday.  I'm getting started with printing the case, using one that was recently uploaded to Thingiverse that also includes legs so it can stand up.

It looks like they included the headers to add to the sanguinololu, which was considerate.  I still need to get the stuff I need to make a static free work area before I get into it.  I also wanted to get the printing done while everything is working in case I mess something up.

Mine has also arrived. Trying to figure out how the extra wires apart from the 22 broadband should go.
Solidoodle hasn´t arrived yet though, so have some time to fiddle around with the Panelolu LCD.

Re: Panelolu has arrived

I've had a quick go and separated the wires, all labelled individually as they appear in the tutorial instructions.

Those instructions rely on the user following the wiring schematic at the top of the instructions. As I do so, I plan to make a more clear cut set of step by step instructions.

Probably won't be until the weekend though.

Re: Panelolu has arrived

Ian, did you get yours from ebay or from a retailer? if from ebay, what seller?

Re: Panelolu has arrived

I got it through emaker.com.  Actually it was direct from Think3DPrint3D.  If you want the soldering done for you, you have to send them an email requesting it and they will send a PayPal invoice for the order.

I bought mine from the ebay shop of the same people, except on ebay they seem to have drop downs for the pre soldered option.

Same here, ebay, choosed pre-soldered. Also bought a new RepRap Sanguinololu 1.3a Complete electronics solution from them which gives me a new board to play around with, also included 3 more endstops and the headers pre-soldered for the lcd

Hi,

in the ebay offer was also a interesting link:

This helped me to understand things better.
I think I will go for PC-/MAC-less printing.

I placed my order 08-18-2012, ID: 3676, it's hard to wait!

Re: Panelolu has arrived

Just ordered my kit. Preassembled, soldered with sdsl & lcd. I really don't know if I have the ability to solder/assemble this thing to the printer. Just hoping 1 of you guys write up a great walk trough so I'll work up my confidence to do it. Is there anything apart from this kit that I'll need? Thanks guys

Re: Panelolu has arrived

I'm part way through making hopefully a great guide as we speak.

Other tools I've used so far are:

-soldering iron
-masking tape
-wire stripper
-scissors
-small piers

Don't think there will be much else.

Great, thanks lawsy. Keep up the great work

Re: Panelolu has arrived

Maybe a very stupid question but what sort of solder should be used?

Re: Panelolu has arrived

I've gathered together the tools I think I'm going to need for the soldering.  I was planning to put together the cable and assemble the panel first and then tackle the board upgrade.  I'm starting to think I want to solder on the headers and upgrade the chip first just to get it over with.  Once I have the headers on, I can try out the SD reader by itself and make sure that aspect is working before adding in the LCD.

I haven't done any electronics work before, so I'm adding to my own tools and skillset.  I got a anti-static wrist strap and an anti-static mat to work on, a helping hands, and a solder iron with a very narrow tip which can be changed.

You should use lead-free silver-based rosin core, but 70/30 lead tin rosin core is SO much easier to work with.

If you haven't soldered components before, get a cheap board and some parts from radioshack and go for it.  Find out how much your iron takes before it burns a trace.  See how much solder it takes to fill a hole.  There's lots of how-to's out there.
