Re: Staples to sell 3d printers

I don't think that is going to go well.  People are going to expect a 3D inkjet, and not even the Cube is to that point yet.  However it is good that someone is jumping into the mainstream retail waters first so everyone else can see if they get eaten by sharks.  I don't think you want to try that until you have some serious customer support in place.  Preferably on site at the store like Apple's Genius Bar.

Re: Staples to sell 3d printers

I mean, there's some speculation that the huge influx of money from stocking the Cube will allow for improvements in the maintenance and service departments. I think people will become quickly disillusioned with the cartridge model of the Cube, but the Cube WILL boost awareness of 3D printing and its capabilities. And hopefully for every 10 people who get a Cube and hate it, one of them will realize there are other machines out there and keep with it.

Re: Staples to sell 3d printers

I was looking at the Cube and know some people that have it.  I think it is probably the easiest 3DPrinter to use so they maybe have the best chance of making this work.

For most of us, we would rather have more functionality for less cost (so Solidoodle is a better option).  However, I'd probably recommend the cube to someone that doesn't have the time to tinker.

Generally agree that a rising tide lifts all boats.

Yeah, I agree with people on this.  It should be a good boost in general, assuming Cube's support team can keep people happy.  Word-of-mouth is what makes or breaks consumer product sales.

I think people will easily circumvent the cartridge problem, even the mostly-average-joe consumers.  People did this with inkjet printers as well.  You will probably see third party widgets for easily re-stocking the cartridges.

Third party filament might not work as well if the software won't let you adjust temperature and filament diameter.   You would have to make sure you use the same plastic and maintain the same specs.  I think Stratasys uses the same Sabic ABS that Tim is using with the Filastuder.

That's true.  I can imagine someone testing out a filament for compatibility and then selling it once it works reasonably well.  Basically, there is so much room to undercut Cube that someone will for sure go for it.

Sounds like a potential business venture that there's plenty of time to get in on! Who's got some VC??

It will be interesting to see if they make is so you cant reload the filament OR if they keep to the sizes that are currently out there E.G. 1.75mm and 3mm

We are left now with only one option...and that is without a single drop of rum....

Ive looked into this and the answer is a chip in the cartridge. Whether that has been implemented yet or not I do not know. It was in one of their press releases.

In general its just a Nazi nightmare box and should be stabbed with a stake.

You have to connect to the net to register it before it turns on. Then it has to use their proprietary file format so you have no choice but to use their cloud rendering service. Sounds like permission to print my own ideas. No thanks.

Then it isn't capable of layer thickness or speeds of the SD3 stock.

Then they nerf the hell out of it so its a pain to use when it miss behaves. Which it will do.

My biggest concern is you might be getting a glimpse of what the Gov will try to roll out as regulation in an attempt to murder open source printing.

Gotta protect I.P. right?

Skymall is already selling these. http://www.skymall.com/shopping/detail. … 017&c=

I was shocked when I was killing time on the flight out to Indy today to see that skymall sells the Cube 3D printer. I wonder how many complaints they will get that the parts don't come out looking like they do in the pictures.
