Topic: Search engine for 3 d printing files and objects

Apart from the known marketplaces (Thingiverse, Shapeways etc.) there are coming more (specialized) marketplaces and it's getting more complicated to find the right file or object to adapt and print.

We created a free search service fabforall.com (at the moment in public beta) that allows to search all the marketplaces at once. We're looking forward to ideas from the community - do you find it useful? What is missing?

Thanks for this!

Re: Search engine for 3 d printing files and objects

Have a toggle to search for only free models, and list prices if possible for the others.

List formats?

Looks good though, great idea.

try to do a search on grabcad with the term "dragoon" .. you got 3 answers...

on fabforall, a search on "dragoon" give only objects from sketchup.google.com and from thingiverse

I wonder if people would enjoy Solidoodle having it's own sort of thingiverse.

I think it would have been a good idea, but I think you're too late to the party unless you improve on the format or experience.

Variety is always nice. I wonder what sort of improvements folks would need.

Re: Search engine for 3 d printing files and objects

If it was just for SDers, could you post .gcode files there and they would feasibly work, or at least be really close?

The one thing I don't like about Thingiverse's layout right now is how when you are looking through categories.  It is set up to keep adding thumbnails as the user scrolls down.  It sounds nice, but it lacks (or I haven't discovered) the ability to go to specific page numbers.  So if I scroll through for 5 minutes and then have to go do something else on the web when I come back to the thingiverse site I cannot pick up where I left off.

Re: Search engine for 3 d printing files and objects

When i search i like to be able to lok where i want and not be drug aroudn by my short hairs. Give me the option of lookign at 20, 30 or 50 on a page. not the endless scrawl. also make it older computer friendly not everyoen has the newest machine with the most memory

Re: Search engine for 3 d printing files and objects

If you go edit your profile, there is an option at the bottom of the page to turn off infinite scroll.  One of the devs mentioned it in the Thingiverse google group, otherwise it would have stayed a secret.
