Topic: Open-Source vs Proprietary Printers

Hello,

Are there any major advantages to an open-source printer?  I am looking to possibly purchase the makerbot replicator 2x or the future is 3d glacier steel printers, but they are proprietary systems.  Are there any major drawbacks to these proprietary systems?

The ability to fix problems that may arise without waiting for the manufacturer to offer the fix, on the other hand I hear the special makerbot software makes it easier to get going without too much tweaking settings or the ability to tweak too much...
