Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

Tim, just found out that the empty spool collection has been discarded thanks to an overly eager wife and the fact that I'm setup on the kitchen table.  I'm working on a solution for making spool holders that seems pretty easy to me.  I'm printing a tweaked one right now and I'll make a post about it in here when I'm done for the filastruder users

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

Okay here's the concept, I have one empty that I was going to send to Tim.  I noticed it was 2 plastic endcaps with a cardboard tube center.  I figured I'd grab a couple empty toilet paper rolls, design an endcap and see what happened.  The thing is that the cardboard only matters on the first wrap, after that the filament takes all the pressure.  I had enough filament on a spool of black to just cover the TP roll once, and it's completely strong.  The only thing I'm not satisfied with it that it's still a 20-30 minute print depending on what you set your speed.  Some of you may get it done faster but I use pretty conservative speeds on my printing.  I tried another design with ribs pictured to cut down base layers and keep the strength but it needs more work, it's too flimsy, but the original STL is posted which works well.  I'm sure you could fit 1kg on there easy.  Tim I'm going to send you mine so you can see if it's worth trying.

2 ends (printed) 1 roll (not sure if TP roll inner diameters are standard, check yours against the STL to be sure

Assembled with one wrap, takes a strong squeeze to even flex it
http://s21.postimg.org/i846n16yb/assembled.jpg
This was a concept to reduce flat layers to decrease print time, has merit but need to extend ribs around inner and outer diameter as well.

Do the kits come with the enclosure?

Nope! That's one of the big reasons for kit vs. assembled. Kits fit in a $11 flat rate shipping box, the enclosure won't. I worked hard to get the fully assembled version down to fitting in a flat rate box, but I can't do it while still maintaining good L/D ratio.

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

I threw in for a bottle opener just to show support.  Wish I could justify it the whole shot.  Had to navigate away my order finger was getting twitchy.  I just don't print enough at the moment.  Hope you have a bottle of champagne on ice.

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

OK, Tim, I'm in for the top tier... The early birds were gone, and I just figure that the extra hundred for the enclosure and for them building it is money well spent.

Congrats on first day success!

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

Congrats.

Disappointingly I was asleep while that happened, and I really wanted a kit, not fully assembled as I'm in the UK so it puts the price out of my budget.

Will you be releasing full plans as open source?

I'm not sure I can wait till after this round of fulfilment to get a kit.  (Or can you add more kits)

We'll do something - probably adding more kits. It's 3am here, time for me to get some sleep. I'll update tomorrow.

4x the goal in less than 24 hours that is good going.

Like Craig I will have to wait until more kits come out to make everything better to get over to the UK.

Carry on the great work.

Thanks! Your feedback has been tremendous through this. Maybe I'll toss some filament in or box or something smile

We'll be releasing more kits today at around 4pm EST. Wanted to take some time to be sure the path forward was the way to go, and things didnt become too fragmented or the workload too great.

Thanks! This has far exceeded our expectations, though we did discuss the possibility of such an outcome and prepare accordingly.

The thanks really go to the beta guys - without their feedback and support, it would have been much harder to get to where we are today.

Releasing more kits today at 4pm EST. We should be able to fulfill the next batch sooner than we state (ship date estimate will be June for the next round of kits), but no promises.

We will see! One thing I can say is that I'm thankful my design doesn't need any plasma cutting or welding.
