Topic: 2D to 3D object??

Does anyone know of any software that can take a grayscale 2D image file and create a 3D model with depth based on the darks and lights? I was thinking it might be cool to take one of my sister's sonogram images and create an object out of it.

There is a program called Photo2Mesh that might work for this. It does cost but worth it, if you take the time to configure everything properly it can have amazing results. There is a post on the forum about this and I am pretty sure it should work for that purpose.

I edit my posts a lot.

post an image.  I can give it a shot for ya!

I use carrara to create a terrain object from a greyscale and then convert it to vertex and make it watertight.  doesn't take long, but it can get pretty heavy in triangles and may take some time to slice.

There are definitely programs that can do this.  I have BobArt for my other CNC machines and I can take a 2D image and create a 3D carving.

Anything that is completely freeware? Or a hacked version of a payware? lol.

Eh hem.  I actually own a license for BobArt (though if you know BobCAD you might want to give me my codolences).

I think there's a demo for ArtCAM Express and Insignia.

I wasn't trying to imply that you didn't own a license to whatever it is we're talking about here. lol.

I realize that but I avoid unlocking software that I actually get some use out of.
I encourage others to do the same if they can.

If you have access to a Mac you can try the free OmNomNom Creator.

Re: 2D to 3D object??

I am trying the demo version of photo2mesh. It has some difficulties with the file that I needed to run it through meshmixer to create a valid .stl file that solidoodle recognizes. Also in general the file is too large and likely contains a lot more information than solidoodle will ever require. I guess it costs $75 Australian dollars. I looked up the conversion thinking it has to be closer to $15 as is true of many relatively simple programs only to find is actually like $77 U.S. dollars. lol. Yeah, I need something a lot cheaper than that. lol.

I had not fully checked it out, I saw another thread with really good results. I have learned a lot from the other replies in this thread.
