Topic: Vertical or horizontal orientation?

I recently finished a new filastruder build, after my old one stopped working.

I had my old one in a vertical orientation, as I thought that was recommended at the time. I am 90% sure that I originally started it off horizontal, then after some research, found the recommendation to *only* use it vertically.

This works fine because I can simply mount it to a wall.

However, the new documentation recommends *only* using it in the horizontal direction.

Why is this? Is vertical not recommended anymore?

Here is a sketch of my old setup:

This was nice as I mentioned before, it can simply be attached to the wall.

Now here is the potential new setup:

This is doable...but annoying as it completely changes my wall mounting process.

How do you mount your extruder and winder?

I could really use some tips here.

Thank you!

Re: Vertical or horizontal orientation?

Where does the new documentation state it can only be used horizontally?

Re: Vertical or horizontal orientation?

My apologies, I was thinking about the sentence "Place assembly on a table, with barrel of the extruder hanging over the table."

Heavily implying that the operation of the new design is horizontal.

Also, only a horizontal hopper STL is included.

Re: Vertical or horizontal orientation?

A third detail: The previous vertical hopper that I was using (which I can no longer find the url for) has the feed chute going in such a way that it would intersect with the new filastruder enclosure, and same with the two liter bottle that would be attached.

How could I use it vertically if the hopper wouldn't fit?

In any case, it is likely my error, I just need more information about how to run it vertically. smile

Thank you!

Re: Vertical or horizontal orientation?

You can still use it vertically, it is just the default to use it horizontally because the assumption is you are using the included ABS to start and you may or may not have a winder.

It should mention earlier in the instructions if you want to use it vertically to rotate the barrel so the vertical hopper can fit to the side, I personally like this hopper for vertical usage https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1195942

Thank you for linking that hopper! That one looks perfect smile

How do you mount it to the wall? I was thinking perhaps trying to use a few clamps and clamping it to something, so that I don't have to drill into the filastruder enclosure itself.

With the old version I just drilled through the supporting 2x4.

Re: Vertical or horizontal orientation?

For the mounting bracket you have used, does it put the extruder at a 45 degree angle or is it completely vertical?
