Topic: The fastest FDM printer

Is Core xy really faster than other FDM printers? Creality Ender 7 said it can print in 250mm/s. Is it true?

Re: The fastest FDM printer

Delta if designed right is fastest in my opinion.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Re: The fastest FDM printer

good question.
It is my understanding that the ender 7 is is currently in pre production beta testing stage.

As that i expect the specifications are hopeful estimates.
It is also my understanding there is more to a fast print than pure kinamatics.
There seems to be a current trend with core xy printers and one building there own and entering a speed boat race. IE sub 10 minute benchys.   there are several home built printers in this category the rail core. a family of voron and a ratrig to name a few. This are premium printers that typically cost around $1500 USD to build.

It apears that ender is currently targeting that market. And iit only takes common sense to know there will be some trade offs as ender attempts to cut the cost to like half.

The 3 dprinting nerd you tube channel did an unboxing. and apparently ran into some significant issues. These are issues that ender will likely address as the unit goes into production.

Re: The fastest FDM printer

for me, it is not about speed, it is about precision.
the faster you go, the less precise things become, so.. whatever.

I agree. I never print faster than 45mm/s because I value precision and appearance over speed. I am not in a race nor do I need to prove anything. I own printers to do jobs and nothing more. If you are pushed for time then get more printers instead of pushing one to the limits and premature failure as well as sacrificing quality and precision.

Re: The fastest FDM printer

hey, one thing we actually agree on, Carl! LOL wink

now, to answer the actual question posed... is corexy faster?

yeah, i would say it is - for a cartesian style printer, corexy is going to be the fastest.
Comparing cartesian to delta is like comparing apples and oranges...

BUT - you need to have a solid, rigid frame that is not going to flex in any way, nor will it bounce around (ie: weight)
a light weight printer is not going to handle going fast.

I happen to own a PrintIt Industries Horizon printer - that machine is capable of speeds in excess of 300mm/sec. Do I run it that fast normally? No, I do not. But it can do it. Has been proven, in public, at the Milwaukee Maker Fair a few years ago.
My "normal" print speeds on that are between 120 & 150mm/s

I also own a large format - Folgertech FT-5 - that i typically run at 120mm/s - it is not a corexy, just a standard cartesian design, but the frame rigidity allows it to run at a decent speed.

The SD4's i own, and use the most, only run at about 40mm/s. I could run them faster, but get excessive ringing if i do.
I ran a test piece last year as a challenge from a friend... a very specific test model that he provided, at 65mm/s on my favorite
SD4.

this pic shows the ringing the best....ABS run at 65mm/s and a 0.25 layer height

Re: The fastest FDM printer

while the current hype in 3d printing seems to be around the latest greatest core xy machine. there are other ways of increasing print speed. without severe quality loss. The key is understanding slicer settings.
this video explains the concept well.
