Topic: XYZ officially supports 3rd party filament (with additional purchase)

XYZ has released the "Open Smart Tag" which allows you to use any filament with your 3d printer. You need to buy it which is not only $50 but also out of stock.

So now that we know it is officially supported maybe we will be able to get an NFC number generator for these "smart tags" and be done with all this DRM filament garbage.

From the XYZ website:

Printing with 3rd party materials is now a reality. Thanks to the Open Smart Tag, an NFC chip that opens up your printer to materials from different brands. With this add-on, you can now enjoy the versatility of an open material system on a printer that offers reliable and hassle-free 3D printing.

* The Open Smart Tag is sold separately.

anybody scanned one of these tags to see if it actually IS smart or is just an overpriced tag which tells firmware to print?

Looks like you have to register the tag to the printer. Makes me think it's just a normal tag with a specific code.

Re: XYZ officially supports 3rd party filament (with additional purchase)

Hello

When I read this, it is an unfinished marketing gag! 1th April Joke ?!?
Where does the system knows  the length/weight of the Filament? Their is no option to enter this length & color of the Filament. Make this sense?

I think the guys who knows about the hacking of the da Vinci series could also change the keys so the 3D printer prints whatever filament is loaded.

One important point need to be changed to the XYZPrint Version (and maybe other Print drivers such as (Cura, Slic3r,, etc) is how the handling of a finished roll of filament is done ?!? So when someone sees he has only a meter of Filament on the roll, the Printjob need to be paused, then the whole filling needs to be done and afterwards the print job needs to be resumed at the correct place.

I think this software change is very complicated. When I look how bad the software works out this moment (XYZPrint 2.0.1; hanging job, crashes, Printjob wo no longer communicate with the host computer) I don't see a working solution for this "Open Smart Tag"

But maybe the hacker scene could explain more details

It is not a normal tag with specific code.
The password algorithm is different.

Re: XYZ officially supports 3rd party filament (with additional purchase)

Hello,

I would like to buy an open smart tag.
I have some questions before I buy;
1-Can I use any PLA filament that I want?
2-Is there any length limitation of the filament?
3-Can I reset length by myself easily on the software?
Overall, I don't want to have any PLA filament issues like length, brand, etc.
Will this tag solve all filament problems?

Best regards,

Yes it will fix all this issues.

- You can use any filament supported by your printer, also any manufacturer.
- Unlimited length
- no reset or refill needed, simply install the SmartTag and print

Just for the sake of clarification, does this work with the 1.1 Plus model?

That doesn't come with an external spool holder or such, so I'm curious to see if it's applicable to this machine.

I think the 1.1 Plus is not supported.
