Topic: Replacement Solidoodle bed and upgraded leadscrew

My most reliable SD2 has been down for repairs for about 5 months. While working around an INSANE work schedule, I've repleaced two Z motors and two 3/8" leadscrews and I still have Z binding. This printer dubbed the Spookidoodle has been an absolute workhorse for me, and I thought it deserved a second chance at life. So, I decided to make a completely new bed sled from scratch using 2020 extrusions, printed parts, and some upgrades like a 8mm leadscrew that glides smoother than glass, and a new motor just for kicks. This is something I've been wanting to do for a few years, but never had the time or energy in the same moment. This is a prototype ready to install after printing the last two parts. From my measurements, it should work for SD3 aside from the length. I should be ready to install and test by the end of the week. Let me know if anyone is interested in specs or updates.

I really like this idea, & I would be interested in this for my SD3, that I've slowly been collecting parts to revamp, as of today I started printed new carriages for it. How well has your prototype been working?

I ended up going a different route and robbed the sled from another SD2 I've been planning on modding, but haven't had the time. All works well with this design aside from the Z guide rods (not the threaded). Here's why:
1) I attempted to cannibalize the brass bushings from another sled, but even with a heater and a hammer, I couldn't break them loose without risking the safety of the sled itself.
2) I made a completely half assed attempt to source new bushings, but have VERY limited time with my current schedule. I instead printed the Z guide carriages in PETG in hopes that it may limit friction.

Once assembled, everything was solid as a freaking rock! However, the PETG parts without the brass bushings created too much friction as I assumed they would. If someone had a link to a good source for the bushings, I could finish and confirm this project. Again, aside from the lack of bushings, everything sourced and assembled were perfect.

I am going to list a few links below, i am not 100% sure they are a perfect fit without some sort of spacer from the back of the sled to center the bearings with the rod just a few ideas i am brainstorming.

https://bearingsdirect.com/search-by-si … s-10x19x29
(no spec sheet on website)

A custom housing would need to be designed to secure these ones to the sled.

These would fit inside the center of the sled, again a mount would need to be designed.

Just some ideas. I hope they help.

It wouldn't be too bad to replace the bushings with flanged linear bearings. You could secure them to the sled with some drilled and tapped holes. Ideally the OD would match the size of the OD of the bushings. Something like this: https://us.misumi-ec.com/vona2/detail/1 … 0001422003

SD3 w/ RUMBA (8825s), merlin hot end (in pieces). Ender3 w/ silent board for PLA printing. Ender5 w/ silent board, e3d v6, new z lead screw, and glass bed. DiY Kossel w/ smoothieboard (in pieces). Vellman Vertex (in pieces)
Shapeoko2 router in process of being converted to laser engraver (in pieces)
Multicam 5000 series CNC Router w/ 11HP spindle, 5x10' table, and auto tool changer (in pieces)

Re: Replacement Solidoodle bed and upgraded leadscrew

I am definitely interested in a solution for an SD2 bed sled. I posted in the “Help” section about it: I just got an old, 100% stock SD2 with everything working except for the wooden bed sled. I definitely want to get it updated, starting with the bed sled.
Azerate, if you are willing to share the sled design you show in the OP It would be appreciated, even if its not complete.
As far as the bearings, I like the pillow blocks attached to the sled the best but the flanged bearings are an interesting suggestion.

SD4 with Lawsy carriages, GT2 belts & pulleys, hardened steel rods, MIC6 aluminum + Calidum bed, bearing mounted Y idler pulleys, E3D V6 hot end, Titan extruder, RUMBA board and Octoprint.

Do you still need this? I'll be around the house for a few days, so if you want me to draw up specs and share files let me know. I haven't had any time really to perfect the design, so another hand on the project would help us both.
