are these guys out of business or what? can't find a kit anywhere.

Doubt it. The website is still up.

well yeah, the address is still there, but there's nothing current on it, and everything is out of stock with no expected future date. looks to me like the site is orphaned.

For what it's worth, I cobbled together my own components and made custom scanner boards and have a limited number of them remaining if you are interested in that route. You could also directly email him to see if he intends to make more kits available.
