My guess would be cost. Storing all that data is expensive and if people like most are blocking ads then sites get little revenue except for donations and VIP members that pay monthly.
I use the following 3.

thats all I find now too. had over a dozen and now many thousands of files no longer available. good thing I saved what I thought interesting while available. I have over 15k archived. only true repository left with new additions daily is Thingiverse now though. Sketchup had tons even if most were poor they could be repaired or used as starting point. couple other sites also got bought out and made private or deleted. cloud based sites dont count as they require dues and no downloads just orders like shapeways
yeggi.com is still available with almost 2M files

Thingiverse is OK, the issue is that it was never started as a repository for 3d printable items. It was started as a place for 3d artist to post their work and only over the last couple of years became a place for 3d printing as well. That said there is still a large number of files posted by artist that have no clue what it takes to make an object printable and probably do not even own a printer and simply hope somebody will print and post the finished object. It would be nice if they would break off a section to post only confirmed printable objects so people who want to print things and not just admire them can go there and get things that will print.

true but I have found some designers on Thingiverse like the pro section on the old 123D site that do excellent work and lots of it and they test print before uploading and give tips for best results plus a info file included. and likely 90% of that 15k archive I have need plenty work before being printable. but I put those in separate folder from Known good files. I know several hundred of the files I have are good, printable files so far. many of the good designers just took down their files to prevent theft of their hard work as few even give credit due then start selling as if they designed them. but most Shapeway sellers are way out of line on prices so thats why people still buy their own 3D printer due to model train layouts and miniature gamers need hundreds of tiny prints for their own use, which add up fast at Shapeway prices. those kind of people that can afford those prices , buy an industrial SLA printer like Shapeway use instead. I know of a couple such people locally even here in the poorer Midwest.

They have a BUNCH of scanned sculptures from around the world. I have printed a few of them and they are really great. Here's a photo of the last one I printed...
MindRealm beat me to it.
Not all of their files are free, but cheap enough, and they claim to be print-tested.
