Topic: looks like Makerbot is putting an RFID chip in the new filament.

Makerbot has came out with a new printer that uses their tough filament that requires an RFID chip.
the printer is a dual Nozzle and quite expensive. they talk about how tight of tolerance the printer is.

Makerbot machines are proprietary and expensive other than that they are good machines.

You should know that Makerbot is one of the oldest and most knowledgeable 3D printer manufacturers in the world? In the fact they are one of the first to make a consumer level printer. Two in fact, the Thing O' Matic and the Cupcake.

As Dale said they might use a proprietary controller but on the whole they are very reliable and solid machines which is why most schools and small businesses choose them.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

The mighty board is still alive and kicking.

review here :

this is apparently manufactured by flash forge they call it the Adventurer 3 .

So the  open source  hardware is apparently still being used and copied.

the RFID chip has its advantages and disadvantages. The good thing is things like extrusion factor and temp can be programmed in so one does not need to figure it out on your own.  and that is a good thing.
However if you are forced to use chipped filament and can not make your own chioce then you are locked in  And that is not so good.
