Topic: Has anyone actually gotten a Press to work?

Has anyone actually gotten a press to work with minimal tweaks?  Some belt tension here, some better spool feeding there?  No major reworks? Curious.

Re: Has anyone actually gotten a Press to work?

I put in mks board and 12864 lcd with drv8825 driver, replace heating element to 12V, and 12V heated bed, 12V power supply.

for whatever reason, the step motor and nozzle have tinny virbration at 24V that no calibration can get rid of. switch to 12V system smooth it out. maybe I should simply replace the step motor.

My SD press came with dead mainbord, it is sale for parts for $70 plus $25 shipping. I use those 24V power supply and heating element on my other printer and they work well.

Unlike Da Vince 1.0 and Da Vinci Jr. 1.0 case, which is very stable and block most of the noise, SD press frame and case is made of plastic and funcion as boombox that virbrate and amplify the noise, have to drill and add more screw to make it stop amplify the noise.

if I have to find something good about the sd press will be the front door and LED light. I convert it to a laser engraver and it turns out much better than use as 3D printer. It is very quiet when use as laser engraver thanks for the way laser head moves and the front cover block most of laser power and protect your eye while internal LED help you see the progression of the burning.

Compared with SD press, Da Vinci 1.0 is a much better printer, flash repetier and replace the whole wire harness is not that expensive and time consuming. upgrade to e3d clone and glass bed will make it a great printer.

So, the bottom line is, you can make SD press a great laser engravor with minmal tweek and mod.

Right...However, has anyone gotten good results straight from the box with minimal tweaking?  I find it hard to believe not one Press worked out of the box with minimal tweaks.

No printer gets good results IMHO straight out of the box. Good results is a subjective term, I have seen many prints the maker thought was good but I found terrible. They all require setting changes that differ per print and material as well as printer model. Even the same model from the same manufacturer will require different settings.

You will need to level the bed, adjust the first layer height, might even need to adjust feed rates and so on. Printers are only adjusted to work from the manufacturer. Not to work well however.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Believe it. Solidoodle decided to Mod their company instead of keep Mod the Press. Yes, you can get it print with minimal tweaks. But it takes lots of work to make it print reliably and generate reproducible result. I have so far give up the effort to make it print quietly. And root of most of the problem is due to bad design.

I agree I over mod it because I set my bar to all my printer high, they have to print at good quality (no obvious z-bad at 0.2 mm layer height), and plug and play after mod, no major shaking and vibration (don't generate lots of noise when print at 60mm/s), no need to re-level the bed every week. So far three printer I have trouble to achieve this goal, Solidoodle Press, Anet A8, and Hictop 3DP-11. Anet A8 frame stability is much better after Hulk frame brace but need re-level the bed whenever I move the printer. Hictop 3DP-11 I can not mod the bed leveling screw because any mod that I liked will scratch the y-axis rod mounting block. Solidoodle Press I put a major surgery on to improve the print quality, changed bed leveling mechanism, print spool holder, changed mainboard, added LCD screen, changed power supply, E3D clone hotend. It finally got OK print quality but I can not make it as quiet as I want, so I make it laser engraver.

Right however there is a certain level that could be considered acceptable out of the box wit the standard set up things like bed leveling, and initial start height, then considered exceptional with tweaking.

Was any Press in general terms deemed acceptable? Acceptable meaning, even layers, no banding, round holes, round cylinders, no blobs.

Based on my experience of Mod the Press, I expect the experience this review describe are very likely to be real user experience. Although most of the problem the review described can be fixed by spool holder and heated bed mod and switch to 3rd party software, but there are more problem than this open-box experience review have touched. You only find them out when you keep printing with it for a while.

They said "We will continue to consult with the company, and if it is able to address the issues we've outlined, we may revisit this review and rating", but it did not get revisited.

Might be because the company they wanted to continue to consult with is no longer in business.
