Topic: Want some details about ABS material

Hey all
I just finished my extrusion machine , and want to start extruding with ABS material , i want to know more details about the procedure of treatment of ABS before extruding , and the grades of ABS material that gives me the highest quality and the specifications of it  ,and if any other chemical materials added to ABS while extruding or no ?

Re: Want some details about ABS material

seems to me you should have researched this before building the machine

Soliddoodle 4 stock w glass bed------Folger Tech Prusa 2020 upgraded to and titan /aero extruder mirror bed
FT5 with titan/ E3D Aero------MP mini select w glass bed
MP Utimate maker pro-W bondtech extruder
Marlin/Repetier Host/ Slic3r and Cura

Since it seems no one wants to give you proper information regarding this thread. Let me start with this. Researching is your best bet before making purchases like this. There are multiple grades of ABS people tend to like. Personally I use MG94. Now when it comes to procedures before running it through the extruder, I'd recommend using a dehydrator to verify your pellets are fully dried. I usually run my dehydrator for around 6 to 8 hours before running anything through it. You can extrude with the provided pellets and pick up additional online, colorant is something you can get here https://store.os3dp.com.

When it comes to the quality of the filament you extrude, its dependent on your settings and everything else. I took the provided bag to make adjustments as I saw fit as it was cleaning the barrel. Calipers are your best friend when measuring the extruded ABS. Outside of that though, make sure to check the Spec sheet for any material prior to use and do account for the fact you will be having to make adjustments to get an even extrusion. If its too thin, decrease the temp by 1 or 2 C, if too thick, increase the temp. Giving the extruder the 20 minutes to pre-heat is also something you will need to do.

I'd also like to make a recommendation though regarding the extrusion process. When your extruding ABS, it does put off toxic fumes, make sure your doing it in a ventilated room. I'm going to be building a custom box for my own so I can filter the air and to remove the scent.

Dry it first, you can use an off the shelf food dehydrator, or an oven (just don't exceed glass transition temperature - every resin is different, there are many many different types of ABS from different manufacturers - you look it up in the technical data sheet for the resin you have).  You don't add any chemicals unless you have a specific reason for it and are wanting to experiment.

Thanks for the recommendation... seems like the ABS from Nature works glass trans temp is 55-60, but they recommend to dry it at 80 for about 4 hrs.. just curious to know why your recommend it should be lower than the glass transition temp?

Re: Want some details about ABS material

I saw no such post. never take supplier recommendations as exact temps to set your machine. just like when baking food, all instructions state Oven temps may vary. this is a trial & error thing that you have to figure out how accurate what your temp control is and adjust as needed for best results then make notes as any change in ingredients effects results. 1st time on new products must be monitored close to get dialed in.

so I take it this is not a Filistruder unit? as Tim that makes/sells them is very good support for his units. thats pretty important for newbies. and cost is hard to beat considering that.

Solidoodle 2 with Deluxe kit cover & glass bed with heater. and 2nd board SD2 used not 3rd and alum platform not installed yet still wood. also need cooling fan installed to board. use Repetier Host couple vers. Slic3r also have all free ware STL programs
