Topic: Introducing Parametric Parts -- Productivity for 3D

CONTENT IS KING, ESPECIALLY FOR 3D PRINTING.

Meet  Parametric Parts, an alpha product we've been working on that aims to make it easier than ever to create 3d models. Parametric Parts allows customizing, previewing, downloading, and printing 3d models with your browser.

We're excited because we think this tool will change the way people approach 3d.  We need to stop searching for pre-build models and start making them based on the task at hand.

2d printers showed up at home when Microsoft Office made it easy to create documents.  And we think 3d printers needs the same thing.  Productivity for 3D.

We have an alpha product up and running-- you can give it a try for free with no signup. screen shot is attached.

Make sure to check out the ModelScript tab-- one key feature is a cool, fluent API for creating objects.  The sample is a pillow block with counterbored holes-- outside of definition of user parameters, its implemented in 4 lines of code.

Give it a try-- just go easy on us, its just an alpha!

Let us know what you think!

I feel like we've really gotta set up some rules for this sort of thing.

the idea is at least intriguing. ridiculous that site is just full of administrator created spheres. pretty ugly logo on a twitter bootstrapped site.

any idea what codebase he is using behind the ModelScript?

Re: Introducing Parametric Parts -- Productivity for 3D

Hi Guys:

I'm sorry-- I posted that article. I actually didn't know that software projects were not allowed here.

My apologies. I will remove the post if I broke the rules and you would like me to remove it. I'm just trying to get the word out.

Since you asked, the ModelScripts are python: based on OpenCascade, with a fluent API on top.  I was unable to post a link to a decent example due to the no link rule in content.

Again sorry if this was unwelcome.

Re: Introducing Parametric Parts -- Productivity for 3D

thanks for the info. get a better logo smile

alot of sites/codebases like this seem to be popping up.
http://shapesmith.net/
http://kaosat-dev.github.com/CoffeeSCad/
http://joostn.github.com/OpenJsCad/

and tinkercad has their 'ShapeScripts'.

I wish that these all used a common language so that they are all their own specialized implementations (am I wrong on this point?).

What I would want to see in one of these web based solid cad apps would be to allow easy importing of openscad components like bolts and screw threads and what not onto a user created object from drag and drop primitives.  Along with a community created library of opensourced scad components so that a regular joe could pick a block or a bracket, search/select the scad components from a library that would present them with the dropdowns to modify configurable parts and then drop them into the primitives.

tinkercad is almost there I guess. They just need to add the library.  Any scad people know how similar the ShapeScript language is?

Hi:

Yes as I mentioned in my first post ( and as you mentioned too )  the site there represents very little work. We will release the real site soon. I wanted to get something out to start engaging people on the language.

The strongest solution I know of (other than mine of course wink ) is Thingiverse customizer. They use SCAD script.

You are right that SCAD's strength is its already developed libraries. I initially used that as a backend, but I found it was too slow and requires too much code.

Thus my focus was on a backend that minimizes coding and maximizes speed-- even though it unfortunately means I cannot use SCAD components.

See what you think about this model-- its a bit more interesting ( sorry i cannot post a proper link, the forum doesnt allow me to post links evidently )

New users cannot post links until they have a few posts made already.

As for commercial members, I'm pretty lenient on the posts made, provided the user is polite and respectful of our community and does not make a mess or spam their stuff all over.

dave.cowden is fine here with his thread.

Re: Introducing Parametric Parts -- Productivity for 3D

If they are promoting something of genuine interest to the people here (not Beautiful Villas in India) and aren't spammy about it (Polyamide Tape) I'm fine with it.  It helps if there is actual conversation about the subject, and not just an advertisement that has been copied and pasted to every 3D printing forum they can find.  Most of the people here are interested in 3D printer sin general, and don't just hang out here so that kind of thing gets noticed.
