Topic: Clogged Extruder?

My extruder on my Da Vinci Jr is not extruding filament. As I go to print, the extruder heats up fine, but filament will not extrude. I've stuck a thin wire fully through the extruder while hot to ensure there are no clogs, and the wire goes in and out of the nozzle no problem, but the filament still will not extrude, every time I go to print I just hear the filament gear clicking as it attempts to push the filament through. Is there something wrong with my extruder or the filament motor?

EDIT: So I've just verified that its the extruder by trying to push filament through by hand, but it would not extrude. Could this be bad filament or do I have to buy a new extruder?

Re: Clogged Extruder?

Need more information on your machine. Is it stock my Da Vinci Jr or RAMPS Jr. If it is RAMPS Jr. you need to change current on motor driver.

If it is stock Da Vinci Jr, check my reply post here before buy new step motor.

Also take out the filament in the extrude and see if it is broken or wear off. sometimes frequent extrude/retraction cycle will cause filament wear off in extruder when printing model with complex internal structure, avoid this problem by test print a different model.

If it is indeed your slicing of the model lead to repeatedly extrude/retraction cycle, and you really want to get this model printed, rotate your model 90 degree in slicing software, slice and print again. print from different angle can solve this kind of issue most of the time.

Re: Clogged Extruder?

So I  would take off the bowden tube ( assuming it has one ) and take our the filament.  Turn on and heat the extruder and see of you can melt a little filament on the nozzle it self ( verifying that the heater is getting up to the correct temperature.  My JR came with 2 nozzle cleaning tools, a thin .4 mm and a thicker on that you push down the hotend to push out any filament.  Do you have the thicker one to try that.  Now that another piece of filament and try again to manually extrude filament.

If all fails ( but heat is correct ) now it is time to take apart the hot end.

Let us know what you find ( and answer yizhou.he questions. )

good luck

Re: Clogged Extruder?

One year ago, mi filament broke into the nozlee. I cant print neither clear the filament because it was a solid piece inside the nozzle. I unmount the nozzle, put it far enought from electronics, put in vertical insde a glass bottle and with a syringe I "inject" acetone in the hole, let it actuate and try to clean the hole with a wire. After a few days the acetone dissolved the filament and the printer come back to print.
Hope it helps
