Topic: Where is everyone?

Just prior to a few weeks ago I would see several post here a day. Now I see sometimes more than a day with no post. Is just a down time or what?

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Voxelabs Proxima SLA. 6 inch 2k Mono LCD.
Anycubic Predator, massive Delta machine. 450 x 370 print envelope.

Re: Where is everyone?

Every year during summer there is definitely a lull in traffic.  Most are busy with summer activity and family time.  Most are still here and paying attention just not as active on the forum.  Once fall arrives traffic picks back up.  Personally I am in the middle of finishing up a boat project.  That leaves little time for printer related issues.  During the Summer months my printers become just another tool that's there when I need them.

Re: Where is everyone?

i try to peek in at least once a day, but yeah, busy with other things this time of year... mowing 2.5 acres of yard (in between rain storms), spring cleaning, day job, etc, etc...

Re: Where is everyone?

Yeah, this is kinda weird.  Other than this post and a few in the XYZ Printing forums, it's been pretty dead...

To print or, 3D print, that is the question...
SD3 printer w/too many mods,  Printrbot Simple Maker Ed.,  FormLabs Form 1+
AnyCubic Photon, Shining 3D EinScan-S & Atlas 3D scanners...
...and too much time on my hands.

Re: Where is everyone?

I have been busy, I have designed some handrail supports for the model boat I am building. I usually only pop in here about once a day, and dont post unless I have a question (or more rarely an answer)

Re: Where is everyone?

Same here.  I check in once a day to see if I can provide assistance to someone.  Otherwise, too busy with real life during the summer.

Re: Where is everyone?

Okay, here's something to spice things up: I will be attending Youngstown State University this fall (known for its established additive manufacturing program), and I have previously been given a short tour of the additive manufacturing lab. I did, however, notice that the lab could certainly do with particular machines, and while it did have one DIY printer, it was for show more than for actual use (an older model).
So...I'll be working Eric and the other technicians to see if they would be willing to try using a filament extruder, or build a machine with more capabilities. I don't expect everything I suggest to catch on, but I have gained a surprising amount of knowledge about FDM printing in the past 2 years, and the university IS entitling every student to 3 prints per semester.
On top of that, I will probably end up taking up a job at the lab for campus employment, so I'll definitely be helping somebody out.
In other words, be prepared to see a bunch of posts here come fall, as I will present this to the technicians as a powerful resource.
(Seriously, there is pretty much the entire history of the Filastruder here, as well as posts poking at the fundamentals of different methods of 3D printing. Easily one of the most in-depth, unofficial guides to the world of 3D printing, except that it responds to the user in real time!)

Filastruder 2607 w/ Filawinder @1.75mm.
Dual-extruder MaxMicron Prusa Mendel: RAMPS 1.4 w/ Repetier Firmware+Full Graphic LCD Controller, stock hotends, 3Dator extruders w/ MK8 gears, insulated enclosure w/ 2 heat lamps, RPi 2B w/ Repetier Server.
0.1-0.2mm layer height, heated bed w/ PEI surface, inductive-sensor autolevel, 0.5mm to 0.2mm nozzle diameters.

Re: Where is everyone?

I too see a huge drop in active posts/reply's from last year. also a large increase in mostly new/foreign members with topics/posts not related to 3D printing as the group is intended to be used for. and in non-specific categories with very faint description of subject..more like a sales statement from a presentation out of context. in new/unanswered pages made by new members with only a couple posts to their account.

Solidoodle 2 with Deluxe kit cover & glass bed with heater. and 2nd board SD2 used not 3rd and alum platform not installed yet still wood. also need cooling fan installed to board. use Repetier Host couple vers. Slic3r also have all free ware STL programs

Re: Where is everyone?

I check the forum about 5 times a day, but never log in unless I'm making a post.
I've been slammed juggling life, professional life, and about 847 projects....behind on 4 reviews at the moment, actually.

A lot of 3DP posts have shifted over to FB groups, but SD, XYZ, and Filastruder users are still constantly recommended to come here from said social media groups. This forum still serves a wonderful and genuine purpose, but many people have moved on since SD went under.

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers
Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on
Filawinder and Filastruder #1870.....worth every penny!

Re: Where is everyone?

thats a shame since this group covers anything in 3D printing and has the biggest membership with tons of knowledge on them. just reference posts are like a trouble shooting guide for anything imaginable on repairs, Mods etc. now that I got my old SD2 buzzing again my scanner mods are next then work on the next printer with more features cheaper. starting to get some special intrest groups interested in my prints may make back my investment yet ;^)

did anyone ever get SD old inventory? I still like the idea of upgrading an SD3 or one of the similar models or get one of the MB/Forge clones. some kind of medium size duel extruder or a laser rsin/powder printer some day for very fine detail micro scale prints and easy post print cleanup with no sign of support or layers etc.

Solidoodle 2 with Deluxe kit cover & glass bed with heater. and 2nd board SD2 used not 3rd and alum platform not installed yet still wood. also need cooling fan installed to board. use Repetier Host couple vers. Slic3r also have all free ware STL programs

Re: Where is everyone?

main issue my SD2 had was too much retraction in settings pulling melted plastic too far back making clogs. didnt find much on that issue other than a few others had similar symptoms and looked into it a couple times. now my printer works better than when new. settings are hardest part to get a handle on. then when ya finally get slicer profiles that work you get a different new printer and all those and G-codes made with them are obsolete and need done all over for new printer too. thats main thing I dread. its just like the computer upgrade dilemmas with reinstalling everything and still trying to use old apps etc. new tech is for youg users with enough years to deal with it and patience for it. lol us older guys dont have it anymore looking over our shoulder for the grim reaper wondering if we have time to finish.

I agree, this forum is much more than a hideout for SD users.  There's a lot to learn here that's applicable to just about any 3D printer, not just the Solidoodle.  XYZ users certainly have found a place here, and also Atlas 3D scanner owners.

I personally look here any chance I get, 4-5 times a day, but don't always have something to say.

For what it's worth, I still have my SD3 printer, although at the moment it's just a glorified stand for the FormLabs, but whenever I need something stronger or larger than the FormLabs can produce, I do it on the SD3.

Re: Where is everyone?

+1 up to the third paragraph (I'm not working with SLA just yet).

I do my best to check on the forums everyday, seeing if any of the new posts are something I can contribute to. I should fire up my projects now that I have a break from graduation parties and college prep, not to mention that my dad's taking time off starting tomorrow (leading up to the 4th of July), which leaves me with more free time to recalibrate my printer and start designing.

Re: Where is everyone?

+1 to most of the above!

I check in roughly once a day...but mostly slammed with work and life stuff.  Good to know the core of SF is still intact.

Happy 4th everyone!
