Topic: IXS Enterprise - Physics based warp ship design

Heya guys,

Just thought I'd post some pix of my take on Mark Rademakers IXS Enterprise model that's been doing the Science media rounds lately.
Little bit of backstory: In 1994 a Mexican Physicist wrote a paper outlining the possibility of super-luminal travel within General Relativities confines, IE not breaking any of the laws of physics.
Since then NASA has recruited several theoretical physicists to further the mathematics.
Last year Doctor Harold White and artist Mark Rademaker began designing an impression of what a warp ship might look like using the understanding of the physics outlined in the current theory.
The theory and obviously the subsequent technology are probably at least a hundred years away from being close to reality, but it's amazing none the less.

Mark's original design can be found here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/123021064 … 113972600/
Evidently he's not keen on printing the model via the likes of Shapeways.... Understandable given the complexity.

Here's my version that I knocked up over a few hours today, still a bit of work to do but I actually kinda like it.

From start to finish....

And in 1/2500 scale next to the Shuttle.

And a random render to test out Blenders wireframe thingy.

I wasn't planning on printing one at home... But now that you mention it a 50cm version would be kinda nice >:D

Re: IXS Enterprise - Physics based warp ship design

Right, one big arse print coming up.
Ran out of PLA over the weekend so I figured I'd get to work on the IXS in ABS between now and when my next batch of PLA arrives.

It's sat next to a 330mm long chunk of makerslide for scale.
So in total I think it'll probably be at least as long as the other large 'Aventine' class ship I printed last year which is about 700mm long.

Nice job!

Hey Serin do you use putty and if so what kind?

I'm having a hard time finding putty I like

Powder coated steel enclosure, 1/4" Surface grounded hardened aluminum plate, MK2A Heat bed, .200 Polished fused quartz plate, Machined quick change hot bed mount, E3D hot end, Ramps 1.4, DRV8825 stepper motor drivers

Re: IXS Enterprise - Physics based warp ship design

Hey,
Yeah, I use two types of filler, the grey stuff one can see in the above pic which is just an automotive high-build spray filler and I also use stuff called 'builders bog' or Bondo in most places for the bigger problems or splits in ABS.
Both are meant to be easily sanded so they're quite perfect for the application.

I've found that I've also needed to acquire an orbital sander for my larger projects, cuts down on the time spent rather brilliantly.

Re: IXS Enterprise - Physics based warp ship design

Heh.. Bondo is great stuff - it'll replace entire door panels in older cars wink wink

Nice prints btw. ABS means it wont be as brittle at least.... smile

Thank you sir.

Do you use the high-build spray filler from a can or shoot it from a gun?

Straight from the can, comrade.
Oh and it'd Ma'am if it were to be anything wink

Sorry I didn't know, it's hard to go off your pic and your name

Re: IXS Enterprise - Physics based warp ship design

This is amazing. Any chance you'd share the STL? I've been looking to print a model of this since it was announced.
