Topic: SD3 large part not sticking on bed anymore!

I have the SD3 and for a long time parts (regardless of their size) stuck really well to the heated bed; I also used hair spray to help with the adhesion.

Recently I updated the firmware of Slic3r and everything went berserk! Anyway, now the axis are calibrated and the printer prints in the middle but large objects (larger than 2"x2") peel off from the corner which ruins the whole print. Basically larger parts are warping and not sticking. And nothing can make them stick: no amount of hair spray, brim, raft, and no amount of waiting time for the bed to be "really" hot!

What's going on? How can I fix this problem? Why did the prints stick well in the previous very old firmware but now nothing sticks? Is it the fan? Can anyone help me please?

Thanks!

Time to clean the bed . Several folks here have had this issue.
I am not sure i the hair spray loses it stickiness sitting or it may collect dust or stearates aka lube from the plastic. I doubt if it has anything to do with the firmware and you are not going crazy.
I had a similar issue worked fine for almost a year then could not get things to stick and I did not change my firmware in any way!!!
so clean the bed with windex or Isopropyl alcohol and re treat with hair spray.
Happy printing

Re: SD3 large part not sticking on bed anymore!

I tried that. Didn't work. I cleaned and scrubbed the glass. I applied the hair spray, heated the bed, waited few minutes so everything is nice and warm but it didn't stick.

I calibrated the Z-axis by moving the bed a bit up or down. Didn't work. It just won't stick!

It's worth noting that it's a new ABS spool and it's white ABS. May be the ABS is different in this patch?

How can I make it work? Please help me!

Re: SD3 large part not sticking on bed anymore!

Start by describing what a single line on the first layer looks like.  Better yet get us a picture of just a single line, single perimeter skirt (a square) that cover a bigger portion of your bed.  If that line doesn't resemble a nice flat ribbon stuck nicely to your bed than your nozzle isn't close enough to the bed.  If nothing comes out at all then your nozzle is too close to the bed.

not quite close enough to the bed... need to squish that first layer down a little bit more

See how flat that skirt line is? that is what you need

Re: SD3 large part not sticking on bed anymore!

I did that. I lowered the extruder all the way down (almost touching the glass bed), and now there's less peeling. Not enough peeling to damage the print but enough to cause the final/finished part to bow at the edges. It's not as flat as it used to be before.

Also, the walls are tapering out a bit (not straight up).

What can I do to fix this?

Is your bed heating up properly?

Yes.

Re: SD3 large part not sticking on bed anymore!

Have you changed to a different filament lately?  Also, make sure the extrusion rate is calibrated so a single perimeter print creates the proper wall thickness...seems like you may be over-extruding just a bit.

You can always downgrade to the earlier version of Slic3r just to verify that is the issue.

Re: SD3 large part not sticking on bed anymore!

is this on a stock bed? they do tend to warp over time, and the silicone heaters are not really big enough so the edges of the bed do not get as warm as the middle...
place a straight edge on the bed & hold it down tight to one side - see if it is still flat, or if it is warping.

Re: SD3 large part not sticking on bed anymore!

Hi, I increased the bed temperature to 115C from 110C and I lowered the nozzle to almost touching the glass and that worked.

The problem now is that the extruder nozzle is getting clogged over large parts (large as in x-y, not in the z-axis), I think it's because the nozzle is so close to the glass the material have no place to come out and it's pushing back causing the extrusion wheels to clog up and not pushing the material anymore.

Any tips?

You'll have to find a middle ground between too close and too far, as is often the case in life.

Could not have said it better myself...

and check that bed for flatness!
