Topic: e3dv6 unable to remove filament

Hello,

My e3dv6 is clogged. I disassembled the whole extruder, and I have the bare e3dv6 held with a clamp near the top. I removed the nozzle also.

The abs filament is sticking out the top.

Hot or cold, I am unable to remove the bit of abs filament that remains, even with pliers.

Disassembled to the heatsink, seems to be stuck in that section.

What could have caused this?

What is the solution to get me back up and running quickly?

What is the way to prevent this in the future?

Thanks!

Re: e3dv6 unable to remove filament

The issue sounds like heat creep... A good idea would be to completely disassemble the hotend and use a rod or some sort to push the filament out possibly using the heating element to heat up the heatsink (Beware of possible damage to the heatsink when using the heating element on it, it's unlikely but it could happen). To prevent this use  thermal compound on where the screw (heat break) screws into the heatsink.

P.S please send pictures of the blockage

Re: e3dv6 unable to remove filament

We have seen this before and it can be caused by one of two things.
1. Cold clog caused by using too much retraction.  Needs to be less than 5mm.
2. And more common is filament out of spec.  A bulge in the filament that measures over 1.95mm.
Pull the heat break out of the body and heat it up (just the break)and push or pull it out.

Re: e3dv6 unable to remove filament

+1 to everything wardjr and Voyex stated.

Thermal compound has been included with every E3D hotend variant for over a year now, and it is wise to use it during assembly. If you did not use it, no big deal...it will run just fine without it, but it does help especially with lower temp materials like PLA.

I had a client about a month ago who experienced this and could not get the filament out. I inspected the hotend and found his case was indeed retraction. To remove it, do as Voyex stated:
1) Remove heatsink. Heat up just a little bit as needed, but be cautious and wear good heat resistant gloves or use tools to hold the block as you turn the cold end.
2) Remove the PTFE if possible. You will need to remove the black plastic collet to do this, so use pliers and rock it side to side as you pull.
3) Replace collet and insert a new section of PTFE.

That would be my preferred method. If the clog is severe and you want to save the PTFE then use a 1.5mm or 2mm hex wrench and push it out. I had to do this and I did not heat anything up. The part was probably 20 degrees Fahrenheit and the plastic pushed out clean.
Hope this helps.

Re: e3dv6 unable to remove filament

Also if you cannot remove the filament with these methods bathe the parts in acetone for a few hours to dissolve the ABS blockage.
