Topic: 3D Scanning Rig - Davidlaserscanner SLS

This is a 3D scanning setup I built in the second half of last year. All up it cost me ~$1000. Haven't done too much much it yet but in the middle of this year it will be getting a lot more use.

Discussion has been ongoing about 3D scanning options and others have mentioned xbox kinect based solutions. This post is to cover another option for those who are interested

Apologies for some of the frame rate and sound issues, my computer has been having issues.

Good stuff!  Have you gotten around to experimenting with smaller and larger objects as well as shiny objects?  I've been able to get very comparable results with the kinect on this size objects that aren't shiny or don't have open holes, but it is not super flexible unless you are able to hook up several kinects for larger and smaller pieces. I've been tempted to go the David route, but the price tag is 20x as much and much more complex to use. However, I've repeatedly heard promising things.

Ill be following with anticipation as you progress. As always, great documentation.

I got my projector yesterday.I have been playing around with it , limited success so far tho.I see the calibration panel with the corner facing out. The DLS wiki shows it in. kinda confusing.  How far is the cam from the subject that you are  scanning? I am sure I will have a lot more questions .  Thanks for posting the video. I will try to follow your lead and hope to get it to work properly.

SD3, E3D hotend, linear bearing on x/y axis',pillow block bearing on y conneting rod, ball bearngs on front y axis, fan on y stepper motor.

It was expensive compared to the kinect route but I went that way because I didn't have an xbox and I could use the projector and webcam for other things. The in-software mesh editing was also a big factor.

The calibration corner can go inward or outward, there is a setting in the software to select this.

The cam can be seen in the video, it's probably about 40-50cm away. One advantage is you can have whatever size calibration corner you want. Some guys on their forum have scanned cars and others have done objects less than an inch long.

Dark and especially shiny objects don't work so well. When people scan cars they dust a light coat of flour on top to stop the reflections.

Re: 3D Scanning Rig - Davidlaserscanner SLS

I was playing with reconstructme and a kinect last night, it is difficult to scan larger objects as it loses tracking quite easily.

do you download the last version (ReconstructMeQt Setup-1.1.74.exe) ? in previous free version, the "lost focus" was a "feature"

or use the ReconstructMe Console that has no limitation, but the tracking on this is less efficient ..

reconstructmeQT use a new system named Candelor that greately improve the tracking (tested and approved by me ) and this one is not in the console version

i used it often with a kinect for xbox. work very well if your videocard allow HD scan (see compatibility matrix on website )and if your model is bigger than a shoebox

Did you go the route of keeping the kinect stable and rotating the object or keeping the object stable and rotating the kinect around it?  It is easier to get the top of the object when rotating the kinect, but seems hard to get a real perfect scan that way.  I've read several places about several kinects helping with that.

Re: 3D Scanning Rig - Davidlaserscanner SLS

I was using the console version of the latest reconstructme with a radeon hd 5850 graphics card. I was rotating around the object with the kinect, it works pretty well but perhaps the issue is the lighting where I am? Does the lighting matter with a kinect? It was quite dark, but if its using an IR flood of light then it shouldnt matter I suppose...
