Topic: Help with press extruder reassembly

In the process of disassembling the extruder, the spring popped off before I could take a look. Any advice or pictures etc on how to reassemble?

Re: Help with press extruder reassembly

That spring is a pain to reinstall.  Took me 45 mins the first time to figure out exactly how it went back together, try to be gentle of that plastic lever pushing into the strong spring.  What you need is a video guide, and some patience.

For now, this is my recounting of the experience....
The spring slides onto the upper screw, the lever pivots on the upper screw.  Slide the housing, lever, screw, and spring all together.  Make sure that the spring makes contact with the small flap on the back of the lever.  Insert that whole mess into the main housing at a 90 degree counterclockwise angle.  Then push against the main housing and rotate upward, while pushing hard.

Once the assembly is properly together, insert the lower screw and tighten.  Then go back and tighten the top screw.

Did a short rough video to show the general idea behind reassembling the extruder. http://youtu.be/9kMQEkdKx4c Thank Thatdecade for pointing me in the right direction.

Great video; slow, methodical, and explaining every step. This video should be included in a sticky!

Re: Help with press extruder reassembly

The video is only semi-helpful in that the stepper shaft/gear is not in the way.

Just finished reassembling mine after taking it apart to tighten the set screw on the fiber drive.

As it turns out taking all this off is a mistake.  If you get a 1.5 mm hex wrench and grind the short end shorter, you can get to the set screw without taking the assembly off.

As a matter of fact, you have to do this because I could not get the spring back in place with the drive gear on.

Take the whole assembly off so it's like the video.  Screw the top screw in with the spring on it.  Rotate the assembly until it catches on the tab sticking out of the backing plate.  Tighten up the top screw a little.  You can then put the assembly on the front of the stepper.

The top screw is tight but you can get it in.

Then loosen the screw with the spring a little and then rotate the cover until you can get the second screw in.  The second screw is a pain to align.  I used a 1.2mm hex wrench to line up the hole and then tighten the top screw.  That helped some.

Then you can put the drive gear on and tighten with your short wrench.

All this would have been unnecessary had the set screw on the drive gear been tight.  sad

Poor quality control.

Re: Help with press extruder reassembly

Thank you for that youtube video it helped tremendously. I was struggling with it for a while and your method far surpassed my attempts in both simplicity and execution. Also glad to see people are still alive on this forum and so sad to hear about the recent news of solidoodle's operations.
