Topic: Ramps issue

Not too sure where to post this as it's not related to XYZ nor soli as I need some help. There is a few members on here currently who know of my many issues with my current build regarding the ramps board.

This is a brand new build, its a Kossel XL from builda3dprinter.eu. Only things that where not new are the psu, ramps board and lcd. I am currently using this atx PSU and would like to clarify this isn't my cause of the problems further down. I have modified it as per to the reprap wiki howto on atx PSU's and currently use both 12V yellow cables and 2 Black ground cables into the 13A and 5A inlets on the ramps board.

My issue currently is that the board seems to work fine when under power from the serial connection, I can operate the menu, the temperatures of the hot end and bed are correct. The first issue is when I turn on the power supply. The temperatures on the LCD will jump from room temp (24C) to (36C) and will not stay at a stable value, they jump +/- (5C). Also a red LED behind the voltage regulators flashes red, not sure if this a warning or just indicating power is now supplied.

My next issue is mainly the steppers, I am currently using pre-configured firmware from the company I got the printer from as it has already been setup for this printer. The only value I have changed is the extruder thermistor to 5 as I am using an E3d V6 extruder.
I've tried to move the steppers in repetier, cura, pronterface and on the LCD menu but to no avail, I have contacted the company to confirm the cable colours are indeed in the correct order and they are. I've ran M119 to check that the limit switches do work and they do trigger.

My main concern now is that this is a faulty ramps board as I've got some rather worrying temperatures on some of the components, the arduino is also rather warm to the touch which may be a direct transfer from the ramps board.

I've produced this image here to explain a little more on the hot components which I am aware that voltage regs do get warm but I've never had them this hot before.

If there is anyone currently who has any idea, information regarding where I may be going wrong please do help me. I am active also on the live chat daily if you would happen to pop on to talk about this.

First confirm the 12 volt current supply on that power supply is greater than 20 amps. Once that is confirmed then we move on. I think at one point in one of your other RAMPS threads I said a company that puts a heatsink on that regulator is a sign of better quality and concerns of dependability. They are out there if you look, I have two.

There is a known issue with RAMPS and that regulator getting hot so all companies should be heat sinking it. You also need a fan blowing directly on it.

I've never actually checked the current supply from the PSU as each time i try to measure across it the sense line cuts the power. I've just ordered a 33A LED driver that I've been suggested to use instead of the PC psu.

But yes once i get all the electronics working they will be housed in their own compartment with heatsinks and extraction fans.
