Topic: Settings

For non-engineers, the settings descriptions are a bit mysterious.  I seem to be getting a reasonable scan of the buddah head, but only the bottom 3".  In addition, the preview shows the sac beginning about5" off the turntable.  Since the TEST image shows the red only in the bottom 3" I can only surmise that this is a question of ambient lighten?

1 thing that would be useful is a diagram indicating the calibration locations and some average setting values?  Until then its a tumbled trial and a error

Re: Settings

I personally think the description underneath each setting are pretty self explanatory, but here are my settings.

On the Setup page, there are only a few things you need to enter, the grayed out values are either fixed, or automatically generated based on values you enter elsewhere.

Camera Y refers to the height of the camera above the surface of the turntable, so measure that height and enter the number here.

Camera Z refers to the distance from the center of the turntable to the face of the camera.

Left & Right Laser X is the distance from the center of the camera lens to the center of the laser body, measured at the face of the camera.  So put a straight edge across the face of the camera stretching from one laser to the other, then measure that distance.  In my case, it was 5.25".  The right laser value is enter as a positive number, the left as a negative number

One last important value is the Ground Plane Height, on the main settings page.  This value is usually "0".  This value refers to the top of the turntable.  Any value you enter here, will act as a cutoff for the bottom of the model.  So if you enter a value of "2" for example, the bottom 2" will be cut off in the final scan.

As far as the height of the scan, total height of usable scan is about 6.5"-7".  It depends on your camera and laser alignment.

Good luck.

Re: Settings

I know it's frustrating to mentor the unlearned, but the value is enormous  especially regarding pos and neg values!

Thank you for your effort.

Re: Settings

Thank you Pirvan, I didn't get there yet as I am struggling with FreeLSS saving settings, anyway these details are most useful.
Regarding distances, are we talking about aerial distances or normals?
I suppose Camera Z is the distance between the center of the turntable and the projection of the camera lens over the turntable plane?

Also, same thing goes for laser coordinates I suppose, even in regard of definitionos the X Y and Z axis, yes?

By using these measurements I get a deformed vase as if it was streched upwards, or shrinked on the sides

Re: Settings

shouldnt we use MM instead of inches as measurements since the 3D printers do?

Re: Settings

if you make an STL using inches it has to be converted to MM to print right or scale right otherwise its way off

Re: Settings

also we need a tutorial on setup and getting proper lighting to get good scans like posted on here. I am not getting anything close to usable views/scans still and no instructions help  any further than basic calibrations. even google, youtube has nothing that helps with this. or tells what post programs are used if any. most just make it look like you can scan and print without post repairs, splicing etc. I posted screenshots of my best attempts so far in topic "getting good results" because I am not. and NO it has nothing to do with my PC. can I get a little help here?? so far my experiences with the Atlas 3D Scanner have been below piss poor aggravating waste of time and money. and from a few other posts read I am not alone. also I saw a setup spec sheet in another post by the designer showing a place to select which size turntable is used as if to ignor anything scanned beyond it which would help lots with cleanup. and how do we find what version software we are using? clicking update simply states none available without searching. I saw posts about a new version that had improvements added at some point.

I think I've had enough, and I need to say this.

Are you listening to yourself ?!?!?!

All I've heard from you since you got your Atlas scanner is complaints on how everything is broken, nothing works, can't do this, can't do that, there's no one to show me what to do, there's no information on how to do this or that.

And when someone points you to the answer you come back complaining about what's wrong with the answer and how it doesn't work for you.

If you would even bother to search through the posts in this forum, you'd find that most of your questions have already been answered.  You have been given as much help as anyone can have, yet it's never right, because the error lies somewhere else, but never with you or your pc.  Case in point: "I posted screenshots of my best attempts so far in topic "getting good results" because I am not. and NO it has nothing to do with my PC.".

I has become evident that you want everything handed to you on a silver platter and have no desire to try and learn, or help yourself.  Worse yet you are insinuating that no one is helping you, which is just plain BS

I don't know how others feel about this, but I for one, am done helping.  Good luck to you.

Re: Settings

did search and no posts or info explaining the settings for laser/camera lighting balance and what those settings may or may not do based on how much ambient light. only thing the Getting started doc says is laser threshold too low may cause laser lines to miss or not be seen completely by camera if ambiant is too bright. so just make sure laser lines are connected. then if set too high it can cause laser to reflect and make extra spots during scan.

the other settings are not explained just says set to auto. camera exposure, laser width,l noise removal, image threshold, stability delay... just a line definition of them.

how does laser width get changed with a fixed beam lens? like a laser pointer with line lens similar to Saw guides and  and levels?

and lingo like 'point cloud', added to all the Camera and laser jargon which many are not familiar with. all this must be learned and understood b4 any sense can be made out of it when trying to setup the scanner to perform as intended.

I was an HVAC Instructor for years teaching adults advanced level classes and one thing I learned and told students long ago was be patient and dont be afraid to ask questions, as the only dumb question is the one not asked beforehand so you dont mess up.

most buyers are willing to work at perfecting our 3d printing tools but much of it needs understood to do so. thats not being unreasonable expectations, rather Technically inclined smart work ethics for safety and efficiency getting best performance out of our investment.

and the reason you see defensive comments in my posts is due to impatient responses from people who cant understand why everyone doesn't already know everything about a device that they do, and they look for user error or users faulty equipment to blame for our troubles. that is NOT helpful, only insulting.

so sorry if I am not the know it all on this stuff that some are. I am just another sucker that blew my hard to come by Money on something with hopes it would perform as advertised 'out of the box' or at least have tech support to help me get it to.

I do very much appreciate any/all constructive help/advice from many of the members on this forum. just get tired of hearing wrong remarks about myself and my equipment when the devices I am trying to make work right just aggravate the hell out of me constantly also.

ever have a household appliance break down on you and being technical with tools you try to repair it yourself (unfamiliar with the appliance) then after your ready to toss it to the curb you take a break and call tech support (steaming mad still) the Robot circle jerk phone system tells you 6 different buttons to push, asks for all kinds of info, then says its gonna cost you $12 a minute and your hold time for next available "LIVE PERSON" is 45mins? (Sears 700 tech line). would you want to be that person that picks up the other end of the line??? thats kinda what its like when being slammed about your own stuff instead of learning how to fix the item in question. see I was a professional Technician in Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning and Refrigeration/ Appliance repair, sales, Installer doing Residential, Commercial (like hotels restaurants) Industrial I have manufactured, Installed, Repaired everything from your toaster to the 500 ton Centrifugal Chillers and every aspect of them for over 40 of my 58 years life. certified/licensed in dozens of fields. so if anybody has earned the right to be a tired Ol man its me!

now can somebody with answers please help this Ol fart so I dont annoy everybody else so much more? I'm retired, Disabled, on limited fixed/broken income just not pregnant in hospital or Id have 1st dibs hehe

Re: Settings

if RPi had a camera with the lens adjusted for Macro already we wouldnt have to try performing brain surgery on our new parts risking destroying them to get required performance from them.

this is one of the main issues I think with tuning fine scans. sharp focus. still not sure if laser lines are thin enough too and how to control ambient lighting (preferably inside a dark enclosure keeping stray light out and laser light in for safety.
