Topic: Anyone built the enclosure kit?

I bought the acrylic enclosure kit and unless I am doing something wrong, it looks like the ribbon cable from the camera to the Pi is going to be too short (at least an inch, and more like two).

Can someone post a few closeup photos of the camera mounted on the camera bracket (piece "FD" in the enclosure kit) and maybe how you snaked the ribbon cable out and to the camera.

Thanks.

isubsmith,

You should have received an additional ribbon cable that is two inches longer than the one attached to the camera.

Ah ha! I missed that. Sweet. Continuing the build now smile

Re: Anyone built the enclosure kit?

Questions on this topic...also note I emailed you, Uriah, as I am missing at least one component it seems.

I would love a video showing the assembly as you did for the printed version.

The parts list shows one each of two square acrylic either spacers or similar-just small squares with holes through..one has sharp edges one rounded...I have NINE objects...all with more rounded edges....Will this be a problem?

Re: Anyone built the enclosure kit?

My kit seems to be missing the camera cable extension also. In addition to errors in the parts count several of the packages have the same letter for different parts sets. Also, the instructions leave a lot to be desired. If FB is attached as indicated then other parts can't be assembled because of interference with FB. Use tape to retain the Pi mounting screws prior to adding the square spacers, the washers, the Pi and the nuts.

The little squares are used as spacers and I haven't gotten to using the round cornered ones yet. I really didn't like the way the electronics board was mounted without spacers so I trimmed the leads on all of the components and used 1/16" spacers that I had on hand.

The leads on the switch seem a tad long and I think all of the wire attachments to the electronics board should be done before bolting things together. Be sure to route the LASER wires through their respective holes first as required. Also when plugging the ribbon cable into the Pi be sure to support the Pi with another 1/4" thick part so as to not put to much bending strain on the Pi.

That is as far as I got today given that I'm missing the camera cable extension.

Re: Anyone built the enclosure kit?

Hmm...because of the time added to the process by ordering the enclosure I now have only ten days to request a return since it's 30 days from the ORDER.  Not sure I can build and try it by then with a missing piece.

I think I'm going to request a return-even if I tried to 3d print a new enclosure it leaves little time to test....bummer.

Re: Anyone built the enclosure kit?

I was successful building my kit after finding the extra length camera cable. I've scanned a few items already.

I agree that the instructions can be a bit hard to follow. A video would have been very helpful, or at least a few pictures showing parts orientations, etc. ("Front" or "left side" for example without reference to which direction things face can be problematic). I'm not a huge fan of making all of the electronics basically inaccessible as well. I appreciate the look, but you can't verify operation until everything is done. Then, if you have to change anything, you have to dismantle the entire structure. Don't ask me how I know....

The interior size of the holes on the ever-so-slightly rounded square standoffs are different than the not-considered-rounded squares I believe. Otherwise it wouldn't matter which ones you used where (i.e. there is no physical reason that I can see for one being rounded vs not, other than a way to differentiate the two parts with different hole diameters). I believe the square edges are for the standard "D" screws (3mm?) and the rounded edges are for the 2mm or 2.5mm screws for the Pi.

I didn't end up attaching the "T" shaped piece on the back that covers up the laser wires and camera cable. It appeared that it was going to squash the camera cable and I wasn't comfortable doing that for mostly cosmetics. So, I used a couple pieces of tape to hold things fairly neat/tidy and used the shorter bolts to fill the extra set of holds for the laser support pieces.

All in all, I think the kit was pretty decent, but could use some improvement on the instructions. I very much like the single, solid ~1/4" thick piece of acrylic for the shell over printed parts. The completed scanner is very hefty and solid feeling and I think will hold up better than a 3D printed version.

Re: Anyone built the enclosure kit?

I emailed Uriah so hopefully he will reply here or to that, but it seems like the best choice is to process a return and shop around a bit...then maybe things will evolve with Murobo and I'll order one again.  I'm down to ten days to do a return and I have no idea what other surprises are awaiting me.   But I am clearly missing one piece ...and they seem to be backordered on kits so I have no idea how long it will take to get me the missing piece.
Edit:  on top of which I now realize I am missing one type of spacer and from the last post it seems they are different.

Obviously I don't want to get the missing piece ten days from now, find out there's another problem and be stuck.

Re: Anyone built the enclosure kit?

I was kind of in a hurry but with missing pieces I am stuck.

Clearly I need to return the incomplete kit...but does anyone know of another decent option like this for 3d scanning?

The Ciclop is more expensive but involves less construction and would therefore hopefully not show up with missing pieces...has anyone used one?

Re: Anyone built the enclosure kit?

Uriah's a great guy, I'm sure he'll get you straightened out. I wouldn't worry about the 30 day window too much, I'm sure it'd be easier to just have anything missing sent your way than go through the return rigamarole.

What pieces are you missing specifically? I have some kit enclosures here (I also sell them through my store) and could send you anything you're missing.

Re: Anyone built the enclosure kit?

As you mentioned he is being a great guy.

Hopefully we are working through this and will resolve.

Not much news here but wanted to publicly acknowledge that he is trying to make it right.

Uriah

I too was missing the extension cable was missing from mine.  I purchased an 8 in cale.

Anyone be prepared to post pics?

Re: Anyone built the enclosure kit?

I ended up returning it for refund.

Looking around this still looks closer to the early days of 3d printing.  I was looking for something to just jump in and it seems like those products are still way too expensive.

If anyone knows of one that is easier to assemble and gets good results without tons of post processing let me know, but I'll bet they are all hugely expensive

Re: Anyone built the enclosure kit?

I've posted a private message here and at the store about the missing camera extension cable but haven't received a reply. It's been two weeks.

I think - having spent a lot of time looking, and working in high re imaging - that all aspects of this hobby are in the embryonic stages.  I have found nothing that 'just works' at any price, let alone at the hobby end of the market.

If you want to play in this area, it seems like we have to do a lot ourselves - we will be the pioneers.

Cheers

It seems that my double posting about the missing camera extension cable created confusion. Uriah PMed me and the missing cable has been received.
