You're spamming the boards, please stop. This is the only warning, the next step is a ban.

An upgrade? Thats cute, it has integrated drivers. No reputable company would make a controller that would not allow the consumer to replace the drivers or give them a choice between the major ones.

Really????

Solidoodle uses the Printrboard which has integrated drivers.  So does the Printrbot, it uses the same boards.

Rambo has integrated drivers, Smoothie board is another one that comes to mind.

I'm sure more will come to me.

Re: A power 3d printer controller board - FastBot BBP

True and those all have proven to be an issue as in replacing entire board for a fifteen dollar driver if one gets blown. My number one criteria for selecting a controller is replaceable drivers after having two different boards blow one that was not discreet.

Mightyboard has socketed drivers, panucatt also uses socketed. Im sorry but brands may be a big thing to some, but serviceability is bigger to me than a brand. I am sure we will also see later versions of those brands going to sockets as well unless they are using the current setup to gouge customers for an entire new board over a blown driver which I suspect is the case for non-warranty customers.

Re: A power 3d printer controller board - FastBot BBP

While I agree that having socketted drivers makes for easy troubleshooting and inexpensive repairs, I was merely responding to your statement that:

No reputable company would make a controller that would not allow the consumer to replace the drivers

Considering you're posting on a forum that caters primarily to Solidoodle users, and that Solidoodle has been using the single board solution (Printrboard) for nearly 2 years, I found your statement to be "misguided" at best, as it implies the Solidoodle is NOT made by a reputable company.

From the shipping track record and the customer service complaint post I have seen on this "for SD forum" I would have to say your definition of reputable is questionable at best. The main reason they use the Printrboard is price. It is if not the lowest priced board out there. Unless you want to count a Gen7 as well.

In all honesty and fairness, I have yet to see a 3D printer brand that I would consider reputable. They all have their fair share of skeletons in their closets.

Re: A power 3d printer controller board - FastBot BBP

My definition of a disreputable company is one that either cheats, scams their customers, or simply doesn't stand behind their product and refuse to support it.  The latter seems to be pretty endemic for most 3D printer vendors, but I don't think Solidoodle stands out in any way compared to other vendors.

Yes, they have problems making deadlines sometimes (most of the time ?), but in general, they're not that bad, and the fact that so many of us are here goes to show you that we do believe in the product.

Just out of curiosity, what attracted you to our corner of the 3D printing world?

From your comments I take it you don't own a Solidoodle, yet conidering the sheer number of post you made in less than a year, you seem to be quite comfortable on this forum.

CTC you say ?... that wouldn't be that reputable company that copies other companies designs and sells them at cutthroat prices, would it?

Re: A power 3d printer controller board - FastBot BBP

At least with CTC I can get help when i need it and they offer every part needed for the machine in stock as they promise. They may copy Flashforge, but they did copy a proven US built design (copy). The sad fact is nearly every printer out there is a copy of the original design and concept the creator failed to patent. It simply means that we have different defs of reputable. But still back to my point I think a company that develops a board that has integrated driver is greedy or they just have no desire for customer support and self service.

I also don't believe SD developed the Printrboard either, so they really have no merit in this discussion aside from the fact they simply use it.

Printrboard originally shipped with Printrbots, so one cut accuse SD of copying as well but that is neither here nor there. Like others they are just using tech that fits their application. In this case it is cost savings.

Re: A power 3d printer controller board - FastBot BBP

FDM printers can't be patented, they were patented a few decades ago and the patents have expired.

I don't see how copying a copy of a U.S. designed machine somehow makes it ok. It still means less sales for the true innovators in the industry.

Printrboards are open source, there nothing wrong with multiple companies using them as long as the SA license is followed.

Re: A power 3d printer controller board - FastBot BBP

I'm aware that Printrbot designed and used the Printrboard before SD (check my signature).

But still back to my point I think a company that develops a board that has integrated driver is greedy or they just have no desire for customer support and self service.

So according to your statement, Printbot is NOT a reputable company, and have no desire to support the product.  All because they developed a board with integrated drivers.  You seriously need to get more informed.  I can tell you from personal experience that isn't true.

As far CTC is concerned.  I think it's a joke when people buy products directly from China (eBay, Alibaba, AliExpress, or whatever), thinking there's an enforceable warranty behind it.  What a laugh ! lol

Sure they "officially" offer it, but you must ship your defective item back before they ship you a replacement.  The cost and logistics of shipping anything to China makes the warranty worthless and unenforceable.  This is what we call "hiding behind an ocean".

Mine was bought from a US dealer who handles everything. I also do all my own repairs with parts from Flashforge or Uncle Chucks. So all these points are mute. I have never used nor made a warranty claim on anything but a car. Anything else now days is considered disposable and replaceable as a whole. Nor is there anything on a printer that a user should not be able to repair themselves with local parts. There are at last count 6 different companies selling under the name CTC but the original has a US based dealer and a UK dealer that will handle all details if shipping is required.. Mine is the metal version that you can't even find on ebay anymore because the real company does not want to be associated with the fakes now. If you want a real CTC you have buy direct from the Chinese company or the UK/US dealer. I am not worried, I have torn it down and rebuilt it and it is built better in some respects than a Makerbot and I have no fears in it failing at any time soon. The one I have is a very well built machine and thoroughly supported by several US based companies. But again as said I do all my own repairs and mods if needed.

But I see I made a mistake in making the comment and apparently hit a nerve around here so I apologize and retract my statements. You SD guys might want to realize though this forum has grown beyond SD now and is a support site for XYZ as well as CTC now.

The board does support external steppers. Looks like you just need to add headers.

4 pins will not drive an external stepper driver. Not sure what those empty ports are for.

Sure it will. You only need step/direction. You can do it with 3 pins even!

By external I mean the carries that have like 20 pins. Not one of the boxes you can buy that you just supply power and logic to. The stepsticks and similar drivers are what i am talking about and the entire basis of my original statement that everyone went off on.

Re: A power 3d printer controller board - FastBot BBP

You can still run a stepstick off those 4 pins, a lot of the pins on a stepstick are jumpers. 4 go to the motor, 2 for step/dir, 4 for power and 6 for jumpers/enable pins.  Sure it isn't socketed, but it's an easy solder job.

I'll stick with my Mightyboard for now. Later I plan to move to an Azteeg of some sort. Getting tired of not being able to use gcode to run my printer.

Make sure you get an X3, cause those unscrupulous and disreputable Panucatt guys are now using integrated drivers on the latest version (x5)

Darn it looks like more and more of those guys are going to integrated drivers, all that in the name of greed, and the mighty dollar...
