Welcome aboard Andy......let me give you something to think on.  A replicator X2 sells for way over 3000$ USA.   You can purchase SD2's at 500 plus each so you might obtain say 5-6 SD2's for the price of one Replicator x2.

they have 2 sized and the prices are very good  the sd3 has nearly 2x the build area that the sd2 has

Re: Hello from a very excited Englishman in LA!

Welcome here.  I am new here and last Friday I ordered my Solidoodle 3.  I was also looking into the Makerbot Replicator 2, but after reading stuff on the Internet and watching some vids I decided against it.  Form what I gathered is their quality has gone way down hill and most Replicator 2s don't work when received and break easily.

Also the price is a big concern.  The un-built model is $2100 and a built one is around $2700.  I could buy 3-4 Solidoodles for the price of one Makerbot.  Also the print area is smaller, it's only 15x6x6, where as the Solidoodle 3 is 8x8x8.  They both have the same resolution, in theory 0.1m layers.  The makerbot software in easier to use, but has no fine tuning options.  Rumor is that they have locked down the system to outside software, but haven't had any proof for or against.

I think everyone here has the right idea.  I have researched a lot of the other printers out there, and although I have only used the Solidoodle 2, I would say it is the best bang for your buck.

Thanks for your help guys, still not sure where to spend my cash just yet.

I'm a little worried that in my excitement i'll make a dumb purchase. Can't believe i only heard about this 6 weeks ago.

The more i read and learn the more it blows my mind.
