Topic: Getting married and Need a new printer!

Those 2 things don't usually go together. I have been out of the printing world for a while now as I have been bombarded with life. I just got engaged and one thing that we are looking to do for the wedding is to print wedding gifts and do 3d lithographs invitations.

The older guys here know my level of competence when it comes to printing. I'm looking for what the best value machine that has great out-of-the-box quality with dual extrusion. That used to be the flash-forge creator. Is there another common one right now that is newer/better that I should be looking at?

I look forward to getting back into printing. I don't know how much I will be on the forums as I am trying to get my electrical engineering degree while working full time and doing more major improvements to the house. Oh, and plan a wedding. :-)

If you want something *now*, probably the FF Creator.

Shameless plug? Does that mean you will be a distributor for the E3D printer? I may just get the Creator for now but will look into the bigbox later when you get a couple in stock.

Re: Getting married and Need a new printer!

From what I have read the FF creator still has a good rep and pretty much leading the pack for out of the box dual head machines. They have an all metal pro version that retails for IIRC  around $ 1300 or the wood box version for around $ 900.

That's the plan, but it wouldn't be until December/January.

I think I speak for everyone when I say "Welcome back"!...and congrats to the engagement.
FF, BigBox, and Airwolf have either a strong reputation or good reviews in recent months.
BigBox is a pretty big selling point for me personally because I have not experienced any flaws from any E3D stamped product I've come across....
But BB will take a few months. So I would say FlashForge or Airwolf for all shotgun-wedding sensitive events wink

Welcome back indeed, happy to hear things are good.
As far as printers go, no reason to echo the above.  Ever consider putting a Cyclops/Chimera on your SD?  It's pretty straight forward and your already familiar with its capabilities.  None of the above listed printers are going to yield higher quality than a highly modded and fine tuned SD like yours.

Printit Industries Model 8.10 fully enclosed CoreXY, Chamber heat

Thanks to all for your contributions

However, they will be a bit more stable. My machine is a bit high maintenance and in an unknown state right now. I will be using my SD3 for vases, but I really just want something that is point and print. I think the FF creator or a clone like this.

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

Re: Getting married and Need a new printer!

On a side note, I will be looking for someone that wants a project to take my printer off my hands. I will probably only ask $400 or so for it. I'm not sure yet when I will be willing to part with it. I want to get all the wedding printing out of the way. My printer needs to be giving the finishing touch treatment. I was making so many changes to it that I think it really needs a proper put together. Anyways, that is a discussion for another time.

Thanks for all the input!

Re: Getting married and Need a new printer!

2n2r5, Congrats for your future wedding ! I'm glad for you that you had the 3d printing hobby BEFORE you got married... Easier on you, definitely !!

I just give you my input, which is worth not much, but here ya go :

My poor SD3 was messing up recently, and I had to take it all appart again, and mods mods mods to come... To do those mods, I had to print some parts naturally, but the poor SD3 was not going to help, wobble was horrible, just regular wear got it.

I was crusing on craigslist, and I found a powerspec 3D pro for 500 usd, with a shit load of ABBS and PLA (7-8 full rolls). This is a copy of the FF pro, very good machine, with a smaller print area than the SD3, but has dual extruder, and has very small work to get it working out of the box. Put in the sailfish firmware, and it'll read Gcode. level the bed, do a Z shim, and glass bed holder, and here ya go, with high quality and reliable prints.

for this price point, it's unbeatable. A lot of people think that 3d rpinting is awesome, they run to the store, and buy one, and after a little bit, they get tired of it, because it is very far from being a inkjet or laser paper printer. all of them need tinkering... So people usually end up selling them on craigslist for the price they paid it, claiming it's brand new, but you just shoot them an offer, wait for a little bit, they all will come back to you as you are their last chance to recover a little money from their investment.

I hope my advice will help you, and I know you are very capable (even better than I am) at recovering a semi Used machine into a good reliable printer.

Best of luck to you, and keep on going with your great input !

cheers

Calling it Gran'ma, going strong ! <3

Re: Getting married and Need a new printer!

So I went with the cheap ebay CTC creator clone. This thing has some pretty awesome out of the box quality. I know i'm not the first one to buy this printer. I am not a huge fan of the print area but I think it will do for most of my prints. It came with black PLA and was pretty much calibrated from the start. The only issue that I have is that one nozzle hangs a bit lower than the other. I think I can have that fixed and level in about 5 minutes as soon as this print finishes.

This is a black PLA that came with the unit printing off of the SD Card. All that was done to the printer was a bed level before printing. Pretty impressive.

I am running Simplify3D also. I am not printing through USB right now but I do get the gcode from simplify3d and print from the card. It will be nice to dig into this printer a bit and see how best to improve it. That is for a later date though, I need to just keep this one running until I get the wedding printing done.

What is the file name for those spool holders? All the names on my card is in Taiwanese and I don't want to print each file to see what they are. They are in X3G format as well so I cannot preview them.

I printed some from thingiverse but the screw on parts have knurled grips and they lacerate your hands when you try to tighten them. I like the one that came with the printer better but one won't do much good for a dual extruder printer.
