Topic: New to 3D

Hi my name is Bob...... I'm from Brick, new Jersey.....I'm 70 years old.....I bought a Prusa i3 today....I can't wait to set it up....I have a background as a surveyor, draftsman and I'm familiar with cad and Sketch-Up....The reason I got a 3D printer is I'm tired of throwing away good things because of a simple plastic part.....I also make whirligigs and I need to make gears for them and they have to be customized......i3 on it's way.

Re: New to 3D

Do I need to put jumpers under all my stepper drivers?

7

Re: New to 3D

for maximum micro stepping, yes, you will want 3 jumpers under each stepper driver

SD4 #1 & #2 - Lawsy carriages, E3D v6, Rumba controller board, mirror bed plate, X motor fan, upgraded PSU & Mica bed heater
SD4 #3 - in the works ~ Folgertech FT-5, rev 1

Re: New to 3D

Thank You....All of the videos I've seen had all but the last stepper driver installed...They put jumpers under them but didn't specify the others had to have them.....I'll soon be testing all my stepper motors without the belts hooked up...I'm not in a big hurry I want to do it right.....Thanks again

Re: New to 3D

OK...The ramp is put together the jumpers and the stepper drivers....Now I have to solder the end stops and the power switch....Also have to mount the printer on a  board.....There is a lot of flex on the z axis

Re: New to 3D

What is the kaplan tape used for?

13

Re: New to 3D

Put the tape away and go get a piece of glass the size of your heat bed and some glue sticks. It's a lot better than kapton tape.

Sd4 #9080 with a glass bed. E3d chimera duel extruder. Paste extruder , duet wifi.
Lawsy carriages. linear bearings. Y axis direct drive, Kinect scanner
SD4#8188 glass bed, lawsly carriages, E3d v6, octoprint http://www.ustream.tv/channel/hotrod96z28
Filastruder/filawinder, Custom Delta 300mm x 600mm

Re: New to 3D

Some prefer glue sticks, others prefer AquaNet extra hold. Pick up both and experiment to see what works best for you.
Keep the kapton on the side for future projects.

Re: New to 3D

See.......I didn't even know how to spell it.....I picked up a can of.....Aqua Net Extra Super Hold at Big Lots...16oz....I also have painters tape......I'm gonna pick up some glue sticks too....Bob

Re: New to 3D

Bob: not glue stick. My advice, of course.

Fat kids are harder to kidnap!

Re: New to 3D

Save the glue stick for when it's absolutely necessary, like when printing nylon.  Although the glue stick works it is incredibly messy even with the best management and cleanup processes.  If the Aqua Net doesn't hold your print very reliably than you most likely have something else out of whack.  This could be any number of things from a bed that isn't level to over extrusion, incorrect first layer height or even a cold spot on your heated bed.

Thanks to all for your contributions

Re: New to 3D

agree on the glue sticks - the aqua net should be more than sufficient.

What kind of printer, what firmware, what operating system, and is this the free Repetier you download from Repetier?

Also confirm the baud rate for the comport is the same speed in the host and the firmware.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Re: New to 3D

What kind of computer are you running this on? Windows or Mac?

I am gonna guess it is a Mac, cause this is what that screen should look like on a Windows machine...
