Topic: Hello! 3D UnderWorld Website Administrator

Hello Everybody!  I recently have recieved my Solidoodle and I am learning the ins and outs.  I have a fair amount of experience in the 3D design, just not the acutal printing so far.  But I have been reading this site for a while now and I'm glad to finally sign up and contribute!

Right now a buddy and I are in the construction phase of a new website that will be dedicated to file sharing for 3D printers.  It can be found at 3DunderWorld.com.  Right now we are dialing in the layout and design.  I was wondering if anyone wanted to share photos of their projects that we could incorporate on the website?

We are planning to have the website functioning with all the bugs worked out by mid January.  As of now we are a non-profit website, and we do not plan to compete or replace other websites (like soliforum,  I have found this site to be very useful and like it), this is just something we felt we would be good at and decided we should share it with everyone.  So needless to say, we can't compensate you for sharing photos, but maybe in the future our website will help you in some way!

I hope this is something everyone will be able to use, so any suggestions are much appreciated as well.

rock on.

in the last week or so, 2 THINGS have been posted on Thingiverse, which have basically ruined the website.  They are those 2 customize-able rings and iphone covers.

Now when you go to New Things, EVERY damn stupid ring made shows up there...  Same for the iPhone cases.

How can posting any particular Thing on Thingiverse ruin the web site?  I just do a Search...

I like to browse the newest things to see what has been recently added.  Search is fine for finding something you are looking for, but I like finding cool things I wasn't looking for.  Newest items is now drowned in the customized stuff.  They also removed the dates, so as you are scrolling through you don't have any sense of how far back it goes.  Added date isn't really relevant in context of the thing itself most of the time, but if you like to browse it's good for getting a sense of where you are in the stream.

I also noticed that they cropped all the photos so the portrait photos show up landscape now.  I also used to browse newest things, but don't want to see five pqges of iPhone cases.

Their photos and thumbnails are square.  Sometimes I would have to go to the full page view to see the full image, and now that isn't possible.  It's nice that they added the filmstrip so you can easily click through all of the photos.  That was desperately needed for a long time.  Unfortunately now, there doesn't seem to be a way to see the full uncropped photo- that has been sacrificed in favor of maintaining their page layout.

Thingiverse is ruined.. it's page navigation as been changed to auto load the next page... it really is a terrible design and making the navigation harder (back button will send you back to first page) and imaging your cache size/ memory will become when you finally reach the last page... :-( i don't think my computer can handle huge page like that.

Thanks everyone for the comments, tips and advice.  I really do hope the site can meet all of our needs and keep us happily printing.  Right now the web developers are working on the upload function, and we are planning to have the site operational by mid February.   

There are a lot of features and options available to add to the website, so if any of you have any suggestions, we will definitely take them into consideration.
