Topic: Hinge points

Still waiting for a printer here but I was wondering if anyone has printed anything with a defined flexible area to create a hinge between 2 seperate parts on a model.
I assume ABS would be too brittle and crack, not sure though.
I was considering perhaps a slot that could have part of a cable tie laid in and then have printing continue over the top hopefully capturing the tie solidly.

Re: Hinge points

I saw some hinges on thingiverse, but not like what you're talking about... ABS would break for sure

Re: Hinge points

yeh, i was not thinking it through anyway, its a 3d printer .. print hinge pins and sockets like the cable chain guide or similar.

Re: Hinge points

Id like to try to make a chip bag sealer, as they have that one hinged plastic point. Would be a good test.

Re: Hinge points

I would think that might be do-able.

I know there are some flexible things that do work okay.

You might not get something that can bend 180 degrees, but some bend should work.

Can't seem to post urls yet. But for a simple clip design that you might be able to use for a bag clip see thingverse thing:15371. For a more complex clip design see thingverse thing:5580.

Re: Hinge points

I have a hinge that worked surprisingly well, more of a traditional hinge design but it does the trick very nicely.  I left .025" dia clearance between pin and hole and had to use a nail file on the pin to make it a little more round, and an exacto on the hole to clean up the entrance a little but it snapped in nicely and works great.  I attached a picture from solidworks with one piece transparent hopefully it shows a little better.

Re: Hinge points

Nice, I'm sure that style of hinge will last a lot longer than flexing abs back and forth a bunch of times.

Re: Hinge points

I think if I had it to do over again I'd make them conical so they self center, and should make more of a gradual overhang for the doodle to print, meaning less cleanup.
