ok, thanks guys.

I am gonna try the ABS again here shortly at a lower temp (different color) and see what transpires.

I can already see some major upgrades in the near future for this SD4... thinking new board (but which one?), new E3D hot end, the Lawsy carriages, got to have a new build plate (existing is warped - ok in the middle, but not to the sides...)... and the list gets bigger! LOL

hello again.

printer is an SD4, running RH V1.0.6 on an old XP computer... has been doing pretty well with PLA Filament.

Bought some ABS filament, loaded a roll up and tried to get it up to temperature to try printing with that, and that is when the problem was discovered...

going by suggested temps for ABS I set the extruder to 230C and bed at 100 and waited for everything to come up to temp...

Bed came up and held fine while extruder was heating, but when the extruder got to temp, both suddenly dropped like a rock... and I had lost all communication with the printer - no motor function, nothing...

shut everything down, and restarted hoping it was just a glitch... made sure I had good communication, motors are functioning ok, reset temps and waited... again, bed came up and held fine until the extruder got to temp, then everything shut down again...

checked the log this time and it showed a "max temp" error...

Shut down and restarted everything again, set the extruder temp to 220C and tried again - so far, so good, everything stayed up and running, slowly started adjusting the extruder temp up a degree or two at a time and discovered that it will hold up to 226C, at 227 it shuts down.

The problem is, this isnt hot enough for the ABS - yes, it will extrude at 226, but it isnt soft enough to print with...

From doing lots of searching & reading yesterday the only thing I can figure is the "max temp" setting in the printer itself is too low, and I dont have a clue on how to fix it - or if I even can.

the board in this printer is Solidoodle Rev-E if that helps...
