Try some MR surficer 500, Or a similar thick as hell surficer, prior to painting. This wont eliminate your layerd effect, but will reduce it significantly. If the surfurcer is thick enough (say for example super cheap auto generic surficer) and you're prepared to do a bit of spot sanding, you can get a smooth finish

The hair is actually fine, the problem is the paint, especially flat paint enhances the layer edges. Then I tried to do a wash to enhance the edges and inset. unfortunately, the wash enhanced the layer edges again. It looked so bad that close up, she looked like a 100 year old wrinkled woman.

I used acetone vapor smoothing before and I don't like it, because it really softens up the details especially edges. You end up trying to compromise by varying the time the model is exposed to the acetone, but in general, you either have a smooth but nearly detail-less model, or you have a detailed model that isn't smooth.

BTW, the model is pretty detailed. it has some 120,000 polygons

Nice paint job! One thing that might really help is increasing the polygon count in that model if possible--I might be wrong but some of that imperfection looks to be from the model itself rather than the printing process. In particular, the hair.

Any reason you didn't consider vapor smoothing?

Alright... Here are the photos of the the finished model.

This was my first, and probably the last painted model I'll do, unless I get a much better printer, that can do really smooth surfaces (laser sintering, or UV stereolithography). Even though this model was printed at .1mm resolution, and looks pretty good in natural plastic, really shows its flaws when painted, and really spoils the effect (zoom in on the image to see what I mean).

Here is a snapshot of my paint job work in progress.

The problem is the flat paints bring up every little flaw, and it really makes every layer stand out. Close up she looks like a 100 year old wrinkled lady. Maybe next time I'll do acetone smooth before I apply paint. So I did what any photographer would, a little airbrushing and retouching.

Here are a few shots post clean up. Unfortunately, I broke her left hand fingertips, but I should be able to reconstruct them. I had a bit of a hard time printing the glasses, since they are very thin, and they are actually bent at an angle rather than flat, but managed to figure out a way to do it.

The stethoscope tubes were another issue since they weren't in a flat plane, rather curving in all directions, so I ended up drawing a new stethoscope that I could print flat, then I heated it up to bend it in the original shape.

She'll get a paint job in the next couple of days.

Here is Nurse Alice (no relation to Nurse Alice Benjamin).

I've had this 3DS Max file for a while now, and until now I could never get a printable STL that didn't coer a lot of detail. Being this is a Max file, it's mostly made up of open surfaces. The skirt, shirt, stockings, shoes, everything is layered on top of a nude model, and when Netfabb tried to fix it, it either filled in a lot of the existing detail, or it dropped most of the clothing.

So I ended up loading the model back into 3DS Max, and creating shells (extrusions) of every element that was a single open surface. The first iteration didn't work well because the thickness of the extrusion was smaller than the minimum path of the printer (<0.40mm), so I had to thicken it up further.

This time it worked. As you can see from the photos below, she was printed sitting down, and there's a ton of support underneath and on the sides. Removing it proved to be a major pain, but I got most of it off. She still need clean up of the support, especially on the back of her legs and butt.

In all I'm quite pleased on how she came out. The skirt pleats are made of 4 distinct layers, and the shirt is actually separate from the body. There's also a very tiny gap between the legs ad the stockings. Once she's completely clean, I'll post additional pictures.
