No doubt Marlin has been refined and improved since the early versions, and probably has a smaller footprint.

FYI the standard 644P chip can take 63,488 bytes, and the 1284P can take 129,024 bytes.

The standard firmware complies at 49,420.

The SD card added complies at 65,240.

The Panelolu and SD card added compiles at 92292.

As you can see the SD card only add on is very close to fitting on the 644P, and there are meant to be sections of the firmware that can be turned off to save space at the expense of performance. If someone really wanted they could add the SD card reader without changing to the 1284P.

He said he ran out of memory, and this was with an earlier version of Marlin. I had read somewhere else that the stock 644p chip doesn't have enough memory to run Marlin, but this is obviously not true anymore since that is what the Solidoodle has. Upgrading to the 1284, which is necessary to add an LCD, would take care of any memory problems.

The only shortcoming I am seeing so far with the Sanguinololu is the lack of an easy way to control a fan via gcode.

I saw a mention of look ahead being planned for Sprinter from back in March, but I don't know if it has been implemented yet. I don't know enough about them both to guess why they are thinking Sprinter would be better, unless they are planning some change to the electronics that Marlin doesn't handle well.

it IS a good news.. but when you read the link, there is something that says the sanguinololu board ( the solidoodle board) is limited and cannot do all the "marlin" magic... so it recommands the RAMPS board...

i hope that the solidoodle is not "obsolete" as soon as we touch it..

The good news is that despite Solidoodle wanting to go backwards, we are free to flash our electronics with whatever we want.

If we maintain as a community our own firmware, then we can benefit from the Marlin improvements.
