Until those are installed, you won't be able to connect with any driver software.

Repetier was far easier to install and it includes skeinforge and slic3r. Since I never used pronterface I can't tell you if there are any advantages to it, but I don't think you'll miss anything. I know this isn't an answer to your question about how to connect with pronterface, but I think it will help.
