Apparently, the latest firmware and xyzware are geared towards preventing this.
The good news is (as far as I know) it's fairly easy to get round this by downgrading.

Dominick wrote:

You will have a very hard time trying to trick the printer into using your own filament,

Actually, it's very easy. Just switch to stock firmware version 1.1.E and use the xyzware mod. This disables filament counting and you're free to use 3rd part filament.
Both are available here .... http://voltivo.com/forum/davinci-softwa … repository

Just another note, the Da Vinci uses an optical sensor to detect when filament runs out. If you use a translucent filament such as nylon that is natural or not pigmented enough the system may not detect the filament and give you an error.

Glad you purchased a da vinci, welcome to 3D printing! I myself don't have a da vinci yet, but I almost know the inside out from many weeks of researching and I have got to say, this 3D printer is DARN well worth your money.

As you may know from experience the stock firmware is very minimal, not much you can do on it except a few settings. A lot of problems people have also is with the filament cartridge, it has a little electronic chip on the bottom of it, that documents how much filament was used and how much is left, so after the filament is used up, thats it.
You can trick the printer into using your own filament or (Edit) upgrade/downgrade to another firmware version, but there is an easier and more efficient way, with some extra benefits.

That's where replacing the firmware comes in. You can use your own filament and connect it to Repetier Host with a LOT more features and settings.

There is a video explaining how to replace the da vinci's firmware with repetier's firmware, so google search "How to upgrade firmware on xyz printing da vinci Jacob Dykstra" and watch the video with the title "How to Upgrade Firmware on XYZPrinting Da Vinci"

Hope you can find what your looking for and ask more questions if you need help

Welcome Mark. I am new to this all as well. I have had my printer for 3 days now and love it. I will update in the feature but as for now I am just learning with the stock setup. I hope we both have many prints to come with our new da vinci printers!
