I had started to design an active filament feed/tensioner but now that I have a working (albeit simple) solution, that project fell a few rungs down on the list. I still think that would be the ideal - don't rely one the Y stepper or the extruder stepper to turn the spool at all. Then you can put the spool under tension to avoid unraveling and should get more consistent extrusions (no random forces applied depending on the spool condition).

I'm working on a wall mount to get the filament off the back of my SD4. Have you ever noticed how much it actually holds up your axes when printing near the front of the printer? The motors have to rotate the spool with them-not good. A system feeding through the top would solve this, but I likely won't get a chance to set it up and post STLs until January. There are plenty of mounts that will put the spool on your printer's frame but allow it to feed through the top. I would just prefer to have it on the wall--studs are stronger than the Solidoodle frame
