jaman wrote:

so is this printer good for a first one our are there better ones?

Would really depend on what you are expecting. If you are expecting to print layers at .1mm you may be disappointed. It will take a lot of adjusting and playing with the firmware to get it to do that dependably. In fact I have my doubts you can do it with the current bed frame being made of plastic and brass sleeves. At .2mm it does what it needs to do. Can't really tell the difference between a print from it and a print from a $3000 Makerbot. With some time and love you can get quality out of it but like all printers you will still have to post process if you plan to sell stuff.

This printer uses a non-standard controller and as such there are no firmwares that have the pinouts for it's processor set up. Only Repetier so far has been adapted to this printer. If it has the latest firmware which is something 1.2.3 it can still be downgraded and flashed. Just more of a pain to do so. Also . the current version will disable your printer if it sees that you are resetting the cartridges. So that alone would be why you would want to downgrade. Just look at the forum here and you will see a thread warning about 1.2.3 and it will also show you how to downgrade. Once downgraded you can flash any version of stock firmware, Repetier, or others once they come available if they do. Seems everyone is stuck on Repetier for this system.
