on my davinci 1.0aio when the counter reaches zero, if there is still filament being fed, the print will continue and finish. most da vinci cartridges have several metres more filament than the counter says, usually 6 m or more left at the end of the count. I sometimes use this fact to run a 8m print when there is only 2m left on the roll - this avoids so much wasteage.

On my Mini, I thought maybe I could change the spool by pausing the print just before it stopped, but no luck. I paused it and the software says, if the print is paused for more than 3 minutes then it will be aborted. I changed the spool within 3 minutes but then when I came to restart the print, the filament was still reported as 0, so the print wouldn't restart and the software crashed.

You get one of two cases:

1) The cartridge filament counter runs out. The printer aborts the print, and you have to start over. Even if there's filament left in the cartridge.

2) The filament runs out but not the counter. The printer will abort the print (if it notices there's no filament) or continue printing (if it doesn't), even though there's no actual filament being deposited.

In all cases, your print is ruined and you have to start over.

And yes, I've seen all of these cases.
