The A4988's from an RRD RAMPS board, the SainSmart A4988's and finally the Azteeg's SureStepr SD8825's.

I should note that I'm only now testing the SureStepr's, but gods damn! They are so very very quiet compared to the other two sets. Given that my printer sits next to me in my command centre it's fairly important that it not be overly noisy.
That said, there is a hum at around 16-18khz, though that shouldn't be a problem for people over around 30 any way.
Seems they are far more accurate as well, layer height seems more uniform than anything I've ever produced before.

Shall post some comparison pic's later on.

I'd certainly like to look into a multiple extruder setup in the future.
The possibility of soluble support excites me greatly.
Perhaps it'd be worth the investment in the future madness I could enact? Yeah, I think that might be the move.

Haah.. well I'm glad I'm not the only one who has done some absolutely stupid things to otherwise valuable printer parts...

I have no experience with the Azteeg but I can tell you a little about the Rumba.
I have done somethings (I won't be mentioning here) that I am certain (trust me) would have fried a lessor board and my Rumba and it didn't even flinch.
It seems to be very robust in its construction using high quality components.
So unless you have a need for a 4th extruder I would go with the Rumba.  I am going to have to pick up an Azteeg X3 in order to get my Kraken up to speed though.

Fried my RAMPS today... Stupidly left the thing plugged into the pc whilst soldering a few bits... absolutely genius.
Now it refuses to communicate with repetier or the firmware upload software Adrian provided me.. Doesn't bode well for someone who wants to have a career in applied science... tongue

So, wondering if the group has any idea which of the Azteeg and Rumba is functionally better?
I had some slight annoyance with the A4988 stepper driver's being really noising and a little fragile on the RAMPS so I'm leaning towards the Azteeg based on the fact the suresteppers look much better.
But as per usual I have no real idea of which is functionally better.

Thoughts, comrades?
