You my friend most likely have a loose strand of wire shorting out. Most likely near one of the plugs since you seem confident that it isn't at the thermistor end. It would just be easier to pull all new wire and redo the plugs for the thermistor. I know that doesn't sound fun but it is the easiest way to eliminate the problem. If you need supplies send me a PM I have wires and thermistors all over the place.

I always wrap one thermistor wire in kapton before taping the two...so I think shorting, though a good candidate, is not likely.

I spend the day looking over the hotend and assembling my other E3D (this one with a .6 nozzle).
I had a Y shift on the 4th layer, and was all clear of problems until nearing hour 2 of the print. I got a "cold extrusion prevented" message every 60 seconds for 7 minutes....then it went away and the rest of the print finished clear.

One other thing I think I should mention is that the printer began pausing mid print. (????)

Thank you both for the swift reply (and happy afternoon! )

I DID actually just get done fiddling between extruders. With my design, it involves disconnecting connectors.
And I just added another fan onto the board. With my case, the sides and back are framed together, then all fans mounted to plexiglass. The wires have a short leash on them, so I think you are both onto something. Either way, I'm ordering more thermistors this weekend since I don't want a fire on my hands.

Worst case scenario, does anyone know the gauge of wire use between the board and thermistor?

is the connector back at the board good ?

Shorts normally show up as max-temp errors ... troughs are usually a sign of open circuit... its entirely possible that its a dying thermistor; but they are usually pretty hardy so I'm a bit hesitant suggesting you just need to get a new one.. *shrug* but by virtue of installing a new one you are most likely to fix whatever the actual problem is; so it might be the fastest route ...

I already pulled the E3D v5 out to inspect the thermistor which is firmly in place via 9 billion layers of snug kapton...and yet I get this.

What do you guys think?
