You are not going to find a 3D printer that is hassel free. Its still a hackers market. People are printing their own upgrades for the printers, modifying them to make them better. The DaVinci is one of the first that have tried to expand it to a ready to print market where you load your design and print. The problem is, designs change what settings you should use for the print, its going to be really hard to make a set it and forget it 3D printer that actually spits out good prints everytime.

Have you read the Makerbot google group? Makerbots are just as problem riddled as the rest of 'em...

meh, I been through Voltivo's threads there and while I do realize forums tend to reflect problems more than success's, it does all seem to be a hassle with the potential of failed installs, failure to connect to device etc etc.
I do appreciate the efforts coders make to do things like this but I've found that most open-source software is stuffed full of compromise and are constantly updated to 'fix this problem' and 'fix that problem' created from from previous iterations.

I am unsatisfied with the course print quality of the DaVinci but I feel buying a more competent machine such as a Makerbot2 instead is a better path than having to trawl through pages of tech stuff after being unable to use the Davinci at all after I hack it.

So I can't use the repetier host without a hack right? I installed and played with the software, looks ok, but of course there's no USB option in connection settings so the printer isn't detected....

If you want to know why discussions about repetier is showing up on forums about DaVinci 1.0, it's because it's what is used with a firmware hack that you can get a lot more information about over at Voltivo's forum.

Once the firmware is hacked, the cartridge chip becomes meaningless and you gain far more control over the printer during the actual print. The downside is that you'll have to put in all the appropriate settings yourself and it is a breech of warranty terms. As to print quality, that is almost 100% on the slicer and your skill. Firmware won't change that, but does make it easier to use a slicer of your choosing without workarounds.

In another post I see some guys are casually referring to them using the repetier firmware. is this formally supporting the Da Vinci 1.0 now? I was looking at the site and it doen't mention the DV1.0 at all.. What gives?

Does the repetier give better quality prints?? How does it interact with the cartridges?
