Actually, all the parts appear to be in place in the 1.0 version for a dual extruder upgrade: There's a place for a second cartridge, cartridge contacts at the bottom, and a hole to feed the filament from the second cartridge to an extruder. There's also an unused plug on the mainboard (not sure if it's for the second extruder or not).

So the hardware was clearly designed for dual extruders. Whether that's because they were looking ahead to the 2.0 and didn't want to have to design it again, or because they planned an upgrade - that's another question.

Frankly, I'm not interested in it. They advertise "two-color prints". Which means that if I happen to want something in two colors they provide (or I'm using a hacked cartridge), I can print in those instead of printing in white and painting the print - which technique lets me use as many colors as I want. BFD.

Until there's reasonable support for using TPE or PVA filaments, I'm not really interested in a dual extruder printer. I'm reasonably happy with the DaVinci as it is, so my next printer will need to support those out of the box as well as having dual extruders.

What your asking is if it can be "hacked" into a dual head machine. The chance that XYZ will put out an upgrade "kit" of some kind to turn it into the 2.0 is very low, since there wouldn't be much of a market for this as soon as they start selling the 2.0 and future revisions.

Nothing I've seen about the build or marketing of the DaVinci 1.0 suggests that XYZ wants modifications of any sort to the machines they sell. The most needed modification of the DaVinci is the poor control of the slicing that it does and is something that could be easily fixed, but hasn't happened yet (from XYZ at least, there are multiple ways around this problem from a hacker point of view). This tends to make me think that when buying from XYZ, you need to realize that what they sold you is what it will remain forever outside of hacks you decide to utilize.

As to a third party coming up with such an upgrade, that is debatable to say the least. The DaVinci 1.0 is the hottest selling 3D printer on Amazon and that is a very large and possibly lucrative target for a small manufacturer to come up with an unofficial "upgrade" kit for. I wouldn't be surprised to see other upgrades like a laser cutter (already available to some extent) being specifically built to fit on a DaVinci 1.0.
