Out of every method I've ever tried to make my prints stick (spent 2-3 months trying) the only way I've ever gotten a good stick is with acetone slurry on Kapton tape. Luckily I had lots of scrap prints to melt down by the point which I tried it (a small handfull of cut up scraps in a glass jar with an inch of acetone in the bottom, I top up both ingredients as necessary). Then I just smear a bit on the bed with a small sponge once the bed is at full temperature. A good dose of slurry usually leaves my using a flat-head screwdriver and a hammer to pop my parts off (of the kapton/glass bed which I place on the floor). Minimal damage to the part usually, but slightly annoying sometimes. Wouldn't necessarily recommend if you don't have a removeable bed... (but for $5, who wouldn't get a glass bed? it could also be a 7x7 glass bed which might add a little print area for you)

As for the solidoodle - I personally got the SD3 and I'm very happy for the full 8" bed. I spent like $15 at the local surplus store for some acrylic sheets and drilled/tapped the edges of the case & acrylic and just mounted the panes on hinges to the case (had to print a few corners to make a nice raised roof). Another $5 for 2 glass beds, $25 for a 100 yard 8" roll of kapton tape, and I was in business. But I'm also upgrading my power supply entirely soon which will lean close to $100 with the supply, fuse box, screw terminals, etc. But that isn't strictly necessary.

The slurry is just a mix of acetone and ABS plastic. I use the discarded brims and extrusion tests (the stuff you get when you feed new filament through the extruder) to dissolve into the ABS. Since the pieces are thin and small they dissolve quickly (usually within a minute or so).

It's not really a science, but I melt enough so that the mix gets pretty milky and opaque (probably about 2 oz of acetone to about 2-3 g of ABS) but YMMV... The acetone evaporates leaving the ABS in the mix to bond. This stuff can also be used to bond 2 parts together and holds better than crazy glue since the plastic in the slurry bonds to the parts while slightly melting the part to form almost a contiguous piece.

Hope it helps.

If it's manageable, maybe it will work.

In my opinion, you'd lose 4mm across all edges (making the total usable bed size ~142mm or ~5.5 inches square). This 4mm would be used for a brim to make sure you don't warp or curl the print. You could conceivably shrink that to 2mm (or ~5.75 in sq) for the brim, but I'm not sure that you wouldn't get warping.

A suggestion made by a user was to use an acetone-ABS slurry and paint the part edges after the first layer (pausing it so that you could apply it). This does work, but you're in for a bit of work to apply. This would allow you to go to the max edge without a brim. YMMV...

Oh, and don't worry about igniting the acetone. I paint a hot bed all the time and I haven't set it on fire yet.

Thanks for the reply. My SD2 was $499, including the cover and door, and it looks like the SD3 is $799 without the cover / door, and actually I don't even see a cover/door upgrade on the site right now for the SD3? And that leads to the the SD4, at $999. Not an insignificant upgrade, in other words. I was assuming that the cover/door was a pretty critical element of more reliable prints, so I'd be reluctant to get an SD3 without one, and the SD4 is twice the price...

A little Z-axis warping would probably be manageable with clamping, unless it was really extreme, but X or Y-axis warpings or distortions would be harder to deal with. Do you have a sense of which is likely?

Is the unevenly-heated bed a solveable problem through mods of some kind? If that were somehow resolved, would the 6" edge-to-edge be possible? Or if not, how far in from the edges do you think you'd need to come to be in a safe zone?

In theory you can print the whole 6x6 area of the bed. You will likely encounter warping issues (among others) when you do this though as the bed is not evenly heated.

If you are going to be printing many things 6x6 then you might consider trying to upgrade to an SD3 before they ship you your SD2. Otherwise you are probably going to get frustrated making a 6x6 bed work for your application.

Apologies if this has been asked before, a search didn't turn up anything concrete. I ordered a SD2 a couple of weeks ago and am still waiting for it, but I want to prepare some prints to hit the ground running when it arrives.

The bed is 6" x 6"; I'm wondering about the printable area. One of the first things I need to do is print some stencils, ideally 6" x 6" exactly (or within a very tight range, hopefully 1/32" or less). Can you print something 6x6" on the SD2? Or is the 6x6" bed a little larger than the actual printable area? What would be the dimensions of the biggest square you could print, say 1mm high?
