The guy who makes repetier host is also working on "repetier-server" that will be a lightweight solution, in part so you can have a raspberry pi send out the block commands.

For now, I'm using my old laptop with a cracked screen, and accessing it via logmein.com.

Whats a good viewer?

I could try it out with VMware's thinapp to let you know how it works.

I was going to try pronterface, replicatorG, and repetierHost each as a thinapp anyways.

Slic3r will run off a thumbdrive. Just have to make sure that you have all the necessary files with it. I set up a quicky for my work machine that will run a slice when you run it off the drive. Now if only there were a Gcode viewer that would run off a thumbdrive.

I picked up one used HP mini (win7 netbook) that I now use as a dedicated 3D printing host. I can now slice on any of my machines and then transfer the gcode to the netbook. It's small enough to easily sit on top of the Solidoodle 2 (i have the cover on). Best $130 I've spent in a while. I recommend others check with their IT friends or Amazon/E-bay to find a deal.

Hey JeffreySanders, Thanks for verifying that, I got the above mentioned netbook and stopped trying the vm.
It's nice to know i can run it all in a virtual environment. The vm idea was just for when i take my work laptop home, i don't want to get in trouble installing 3d printing software on the company's machine. That being said, I can now create myself a "3d printing vm" once and just copy the whole vm to a new computer and be ready to print without any additional setup. :-)

Nerdy dream, but it'd be nice to see portable versions of the slicing/printing software to make it all run off of a thumb drive. Perhaps, I'll have to create that dream when i have more time after the holidays.

you can find Windows machines NEW for $299.
You can also find used machines in various forms way cheaper.

To have a dedicated computer for your printer is also very nice, as you can print even when your laptop is elsewhere...

It only needs to send out blocks of commands to your printer, and doesn't need to be an animal...

Share a folder on your network and you're good to go.

i have a few small PC's that could easily be repurposed, that'd I'd part with for a song.

Has anyone successfully gotten the software to work in a virtual machine? I tried from a WinXP VM on Win7. It didn't work for me. I was also trying to set it up while drinking, so there's a great chance I forgot to install some drivers. However, I also know from personal work experience that not all USB devices play well inside of VMs, especially newer devices. But it was probably the alcohol that made me forget to install something so i'll have to retry it. Idk

I wish I had found this site BEFORE ordering my Solidoodle Gen 2! IO hate the 8-10 week wait, lol! I understand a start-up company, but it doesn't make me feel any better about waiting. I would've bought this printer today had I not already been invested in an order. Good luck! Kev

Repetier-host is the way to go for macs in my my opinion and Ians blog is what helped me get it printing pretty well right away. I did some fine tuning with information from this forum and wiki.solidoodle.com.

Repetier-host will work with OSX 10.5+ and slic3r only need python which is pre-installed on macs.

it works fine on XP, not tried it on my Macs, but on native windows boxes it works fine out of the box, have you seen the thread on the high resolution printing, it does not even look printed so I am pretty sure the resolution is there with some twiddling..

XP should work fine, but have you looked into using repetier host for mac? It is much much neater than pronterface and skeinforge. Ian posted a great tutorial here: http://solidoodletips.wordpress.com/201 … tier-host/ It won't look exactly the same as what you see there because you are on a mac, but it is still pretty close.

I am not sure if it will work on Snow Leopard, but i use a mac with mountain lion and it works great.

What I found is that I need OS Lion in order to install the software. That would be the first issue since I have snow leopard now. I was going to then use the PC side on bootcamp but I'm running XP on that side. Do you think that will be ok to start? I'm probably more focussed on just installing Lion first. Anyway, if I can get the software to run, I will try it out. I find it all facinating stuff! There are a few items I can make that are ok to sand down afterward. Thanks for the info. I'll take any help I am get on the Mac install tho.

If you're having trouble setting up on the mac I might be able to give you a hand. I had some problems setting it up initially, so I tried installing it on my windows 8 bootcamp, but the installer failed completely. I'm not sure if there are compatibility issues with windows 8 or bootcamp, or if it was related to something else. When I went back to the mac I used Ians blog and went straight to repetier and slic3r and setup was much easier. I haven't even set up skeinforge yet, and I don't think I will unless I have some specific challenge that slic3r or kisslicer can't handle.
