I use Sketchup as my primary tool, but it does have its quirks. Sketchup is occasionally 'sloppy' in its geometry, and can also make some bad assumptions when connecting shapes. Sketchup models can look okay visually, but have underlying geometry errors.

I have two things that help immensely: One is to use the Component function extensively, to create sub-assemblies that don't automatically glob onto each other and mess up each others geometry. The other is that I often run my .stl files through Netfabb (www.netfabb.com). Click on the Service tab, and select Cloud Service on the drop-down menu. You can upload your .stl, and they'll e-mail you a link to download the fixed file when its ready.

They have a free version of their program you can download, but it doesn't have the ability to export .stl files; the paid version does.

thanks, Jemmicat.
I thought wih such a simple model (with no apparent holes??) nothing could go wrong. I'll try Netfabb/Meshmixer.

Your model has to be "solid". I use Solidworks and not Sketchup so I don't know how to help you, but I know you need to have your model solid with no holes for the slicers not to freak out. Try running your model through netfabb or meshmixer and see how it shows up there. But I would bet that is it as I've had similar results when grabbing models off GrabCAD or Thingiverse that were made in Sketchup

To test if Sketchup works well in combination wih Repetierhoest/Slic3r and the Solidoodle printer, I made a really simple model in Sketchup. After importing the .STL succesfully in RepetierHost, I sliced it with Slic3r (which up untill now has always worked fine for me). The result was les than perfect (see pictures). Does anybody have a clue as to what might be the reason this happens?
