The tough thing about a review like that, is that much of it depends on the software and provided profile. That's valid for the "Christmas morning" experience that they used as their standard. Fortunately most of the lower marks are things that can be easily improved by the user by switching to Repetier, Slic3r, and adjusting the settings. The low marks for accuracy and print quality may be related to the Y and Z backlash problems that are so common.

The issue is well worth getting, it's very comprehensive and a great introduction to 3D printing. General principles, workflow, getting started in modeling, even how to make scans with Catch and Reconstruct Me, and clean them up for printing.

If Solidoodle could list it as an option, or work out a deal with Make to include the PDF free with purchase, it would help a lot of customers who are new to 3D printing

I received a copy of this issue for attending the Make 3D Printer Meetup last week. Each of the 15 printers has a 2 page spread and then a comparison chart. They used the Torture Test print for their testing of the various machines (forum software isn't letting me post link) - Thingiverse #33902.

Make listed the following stats for the Solidoodle 2:
Print Volume: 6"x6"x6"
Print Speed: 50mm/sec
Print Material: ABS/PLA
Resolution (z-axis): .1mm - .3mm
Machine Software: Printrun/Pronterface
Slicing Software: Slic3r
OS Supported: Windows/Mac/Linux
Open Source?: Yes
Price as Tested: $699

Seems weird that they didnt run the machine with the default Skeinforge slicer.

Make gave the Solidoodle 2 the following ratings:
Setup: 3/5
Documentation: 4/5
Ease of Use: 3/5
Hardware UI: 5/5
Machine Software: 3/5
Slicing Software: 3/5
Speed: 4/5
Reliability: 5/5
Print Quality: 3/5
Accuracy: 2/5
Support/Overhangs: 2/5
Noise: 4/5
Value 5/5
