Has anyone ever switched to an optical endstop for Z-level on the solidoodle?

I won't be able to make an impressively tilted print bed to show off using the nozzle as a bed level sensor unless I can move much much farther past the z-endstop switch than the current lever switch allows :-). A plate sliding through a slot would be able to move an infinite amount...

Seems like it would be possible to move the optical switch to the back wall where the screw lives now and put some kind of metal or plastic plate on the printbed carriage to slide through the optical switch.
