I would have thought tape would be flexible enough to let the buttons be pressed anyway. On mine the buttons aren't really recessed. Tape might tape the buttons down so they are pressed all the time :-).

I just used a piece of electrical tape for mine, but the great thing about 3D printing is you can think of complicated ways to solve simple problems just so you can use the printer. The saying "when you have a hammer every problem looks like a nail" is more true about 3D printers than anything else.

And little do they know, that when they breathe a sigh of relief that they can start shipping, they'll merely be entering the wonderful world of support calls, returns, etc...

I preordered the day they opened the store for preorders, but I never expected they'd actually meet their estimated date. They have a booth scheduled for the CES show in January, and I'll wager they are really intent on being able to say they are shipping by then. At least their blog does make it look like real progress is being made.

Meanwhile, my stoopid Toyota keyfob once again set off the alarm when I sat down in the car today and it got caught in a fold of cloth in my pocket. My absolute #1 red-hot top priority when I finally get my scanner is to scan the dadgum thing and use the scan to build a shell model I can 3D print and slide over the fob to protect the buttons :-).

Just keep in mind that you didn't order a Matterform. You backed the development of the scanner by giving them some money, and rather than shares or some cut of the revenue you will get a scanner as a return on your investment. If you want to back a Kickstarter or Indiegogo for some hardware by someone who hasn't manufactured something before, add 6 months to their estimate.

Another hurry up and wait game. I asked them about my order this is what I got: We had updated our Indiegogo page to inform our backers two weeks ago of our production delay and have been trying to update our other customers as we go. We issued a factory update on our blog which we've cut and pasted below.

An update to what is written below is that Drew is back from China with a few test units. We're testing these plastic shot units to make sure they're working within tolerances before we hit "go" at the factory to begin pumping the units out. Things are progressing steadily and we estimate that shipping will now start in mid to late January. Please read this update or go to our blog (www.matterform.net/blog) for more information and feel free to get back to us with any questions or concerns. It's been a huge learning curve for us regarding mass producing electronic products.
That will be almost 4 months since I ordered, if I get it then. Very disappointed.

I've got one ordered. They claim the software can output STL directly (in fact their custom software seems to be one of the big things they are selling). Their latest blog entry even says they are on track for starting shipments by the end of November, so we'll see. Maybe I'll have mine for Christmas :-).

https://www.matterform.net/

Whats everyone think about this? Seems like makerbot beet them to it, but at an early adopters fee of $1400 bucks. I've seen next engine scanner, but the software to make it functional is more expensive than the scanner itself.

Will this matterform actually produce and mesh together a full .stl? How much editing does one need to do in order to mesh scans?
